AL Circle launches an updated version of the report, 'Aluminium Dross Processing: A Global Review'

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

In 2022, the global aluminium industry generated a substantial volume of aluminium dross. Out of which, around 65-70% were collected and processed in different in-house facilities of aluminium companies and third-party recycling facilities. The reason behind this is the rising concern for sustainability and environment-friendliness, which has piqued the interest of the aluminium sector in dross recovery and utilization.

When aluminium is molten, it oxidises on the surface, resulting in the creation of a 'skin-like' coating known as dross. It is a byproduct created during the melting and processing of aluminium. Previously, aluminium dross was disposed of in landfills, which was considered dangerous to the environment. Furthermore, important aluminium and other components were lost in landfills. But in recent years, with the industry's rising emphasis on a cleaner and greener environment, dross processing technologies have advanced significantly, allowing for better metal recovery from dross than old processes.

In order to help you understand the aluminium dross production process, the initiatives aimed at reducing it, and modern technologies to recover and recycle it, AL Circle has launched an updated version of its 2017 report, 'Aluminium Dross Processing: A Global Review.'  The report gives an overview of aluminium dross, including its creation, the many varieties, its characteristics, processing procedures, and technology/equipment vendors. Furthermore, the report summarises the market's unique dross processing technology. In addition, it also provides an overview of salt cake (salt slag) and associated treatment processes.

The aluminium concentration of dross created by primary aluminium smelters is much greater than that of recycling facilities. Aluminium dross is divided into two types: white dross and black dross. White dross is produced in primary smelters, whereas black dross is produced at metal recycling operations.

In brief, the ‘Aluminium Dross Processing: A Global Review’ report covers the following:

  • Aluminium Dross Process and Processing Technologies
  • Types of aluminium dross
  • Aluminium Dross management models
  • Offsite/onsite processing
  • Salt slag treatment
