The third quarter brought a clear improvement in global alumina production. It did not, however, bring production back to the level recorded a year earlier. Global alumina output has reached 114.625 million tonnes in the first nine months of 2026, down 330,000 tonnes or 0.29% (114.955 million tonnes in 2025) year-on-year. China's estimated production increased, but declines across most other reporting regions erased that gain. The quarterly sequence reveals how the production gap has developed. In the July to September 2026 quarter, alumina output reached 39.396 million tonnes, an increase of 5.54% over the preceding quarter. Yet the same quarter in 2025 had delivered 39.675 million tonnes. The latest production total was therefore 279,000 tonnes lower Y-o-Y. The first quarter of 2026...

The Swiss manufacturer of modular furniture and storage units, USM is among the rarest brands that, by the nobility of its timeless designs hardly ever has caused to add to its product range. However, with a similar rationale, it is extraordinarily choosy when it comes to tying up with other brands. According to our special correspondence, the news has emerged that UMS has collaborated with leading aluminium luggage label Rimowa, which is quite impressive. ‘Concept USM by Rimowa’, as the result is tagged, is an exquisite union of distinctive elements from both renowned brands – the USM ‘Haller E2’ storage credenza reimagined in the grooved aluminium that is emblematic of Rimowa’s luggage. Unpredicted, but true to the standards of the two creators, this one-off conceptual piece illustrates...

Today, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the largest industrial organisation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), excluding oil and gas, declared that the company is attaching wearable technologies to its employees under its ‘Beat the Heat’ programme. This move is to diminish heat-induced illnesses amongst industrial workers in the hot summers of the UAE. This year, fifty volunteers who were sweating their way around EGA’s potlines were tagged with devices to monitor critical health indicators like heart rate, sweating rate and core body temperature. Real-time data would get conveyed to supervisors and EGA’s in-house health team, who warn the authorities of possible threats to an individual’s health. By using this technology, the company will detect the emerging signs of serious health...

The Magic Colour Machine, designed by Loop Loop, a Dutch design studio, is fully automated aluminium-anodizing equipment that can be used to customise various aluminium components, was unveiled at the Alcova show during Milan Design Week. The machine can inexpensively and on small scale paint colours and gradients on aluminium as well as remove colours. As a result, components may be endlessly coloured with various finishes, perhaps increasing their lifespan. Odin Visser and Charles Gateau, the founders of Loop Loop, who are located in Rotterdam, think the design can upend a sector heavily reliant on mass production. The two intend to launch a mass customization movement by adapting an industrial process into something that can be done on a smaller scale locally. "We think we've found a...

This week the global primary aluminium segment had been quite an eventful one. If on one hand, the market segment witnessed significant growth in primary aluminium production in regions like Africa and North America, then on the other hand, the need to shift towards a more sustainable and clean environment was given prime importance. Speaking of a carbon-neutral environment, following the government's drive for the energy transition and its goal of having net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, Coal India Limited (CIL) is working to decarbonize its operations. Similarly, industry giants like Dofasco and Alcoa, are also paving their way towards a sustainable environment in response to the rising concern about a carbon-free environment. Next in line is the news of Oleg Deripaska announcing that...
