Driven by higher input costs within the settlement cycle, China's prebaked anode market moved up again. Shandong's large-sized smelters raised their September 2026 prebaked anode tender benchmark by RMB 100 per tonne to RMB 5,730 per tonne by cash and RMB 5,745 per tonne on acceptance bills. On costs, using cash prices in Shandong as the basis, production cost for prebaked anodes in this settlement round came to about RMB 5,821.19 per tonne. That leaves the industry's average margin around RMB -91.19 per tonne. Although the tender price was bumped up, the increase lagged both market expectations and the faster rise in raw-material costs, pushing most producers back below the break-even line. Feedstock mix was little changed month on month. Petroleum coke (petcoke) accounted for 71.2 per...

Aluminium markets endured a turbulent first half of 2025, with ingot prices slumping sharply in the second quarter across North America, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. Oversupply, sluggish downstream demand, and rising inventories all weighed heavily, while US tariff policy further unsettled trade flows. The pressure intensified in July as Washington doubled tariffs on aluminium imports to 50 per cent, a move that disrupted supply chains and reshaped price dynamics. North America: tariffs, stockpiling, and demand weakness In North America, the Aluminium Ingot Price Index fell nearly 18 per cent in the second quarter compared with the first, reflecting the combined impact of oversupply and weaker demand. Importers had accelerated stockpiling ahead of the Section 232 tariff hike in June, leaving...

Brazil’s well-established recycling system has once again propelled the country’s aluminium can recycling rate to an impressive 97.3 per cent. For more than 15 years, Brazil has consistently maintained a recycling rate above 95 per cent. This achievement is not only the result of a strong recycling infrastructure but also of a deep sense of commitment towards sustainability that encourages people consume aluminium cans. In 2024, aluminium can sales in Brazil rose 7.6 per cent, amounting to 34.8 billion units versus 32.3 billion units. Behind this all, steady economic progress is also a factor that drives aluminium can consumption. According to the World Bank, Brazil, with a population of 205.3 million, recorded a real GDP per capita of USD 10,616 in 2024, up from USD 10,377.59 in 2023. In...

In Magdeburg, Mitteldeutsche Schlackenunion (MDSU) is establishing a benchmark in circular economy solutions. Through its advanced plant for metal recovery from bottom ash, the company highlights the critical role of reliable, high-performance sorting technology, reinforcing STEINERT’s position as the preferred partner for industrial metal recovery. MDSU is transforming how the industry views incineration residues. At municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plants, 20 to 30 per cent of processed material remains as bottom ash, a resource-rich byproduct containing aluminium, copper, brass and stainless steel. Recognising this potential, MDSU has launched a cutting-edge recovery facility featuring advanced X-ray technology, setting a new standard for sustainable resource management and...

The American aluminium industry is standing at a decisive moment. In 2025, producers, policymakers, and end-users are all wrestling with a dual reality, wherein on one hand, tariffs, energy volatility, and demand slowdowns are weighing heavily; on the other, a push for green metals and recycling is opening fresh opportunities. Against this backdrop, AL Circle has released its new e-magazine, ' American Aluminium Industry: The Path Forward ', offering a comprehensive lens on how the sector is adapting, competing, and redefining its future. Image for representational purposes only The numbers already paint a stark picture. US aluminium imports fell 12.2 per cent month-on-month in February 2025, underscoring the deep impact of tariffs on trade flows. Demand across North America dropped 4.1...

The Tyne and Wear Metro trains, long-standing icons of the network, are being retired and recycled, just as the system celebrates its 45th anniversary. Nexus, the operator, is bidding farewell to these trusty "workhorses" as a brand-new fleet is ushered in. Nexus is the Passenger Transport Executive for Tyne and Wear, responsible for planning, delivering, and promoting public transport across North East England. At a specialist site near Bishop Auckland, the ageing carriages are dismantled, stripped open to recover valuable metals. Aluminium, in particular, takes centre stage here; it’s lightweight, endlessly recyclable, and key to creating more sustainable transport systems. Alongside copper and steel, the salvaged aluminium will be exported through regional hubs to destinations...

Austrian technology and market leader in ropeway engineering group Doppelmayr has secured a major contract to develop and implement India's first RopeCon system at the Aditya Alumina Refinery in Kansariguda, Odisha. The system, which is expected to be operational by Q3 2027, represents a significant step forward in Hindalco's aim to implement sustainable technology throughout its mining and refining activities. Pioneering technology for Indian mining The RopeCon system, which combines the engineering of traditional ropeways with continuous conveyor technology, will span 2,300 metres with an elevation drop of 241 metres. The Trump administration announced on August 15 that it will broaden the scope of its 50 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, extending the duties to hundreds of steel and aluminum derivative products with the metal content starting from August 18. According to a Federal Register notice, the US Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security has added 407 product codes to the US Harmonized Tariff Schedule. These codes cover goods containing steel or aluminum, which will now be subject to the 50 per cent tariff rate based on their steel and aluminum content. Non-steel or non-aluminum components of these products will continue to be taxed at previously established tariff levels for imports from specific countries, the notice clarified. The US President Donald Trump in his...

Since 2017, RUSAL has been implementing a Low-Cost Energy-Saving Solutions Program for electrolysers. Each year, between 300 and 1,300 electrolysers have been converted to energy-efficient configurations. As of now, these designs have been installed in more than 5,500 electrolysers across five of RUSAL’s aluminium smelters. By the end of 2024, annual electricity savings from the upgraded designs exceeded 500 mln kWh for the first time, which in monetary terms amounted to over $21.2 mln. Since the program’s launch, RUSAL has saved more than 2.5 billion kWh of electricity. “The transition to energy-efficient electrolyser designs directly improves both the environmental sustainability and economic performance of our smelters. The program has proven highly effective: we’ve achieved annual...

EcoPro announced on August 17 that its cumulative sales of nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA) cathode materials have surpassed 300,000 tonnes as of the first half of this year (H1 2025). This amount is sufficient to produce around 3 million electric vehicles. Since beginning commercial production of NCA cathode materials in 2008, EcoPro initially sold approximately 100,000 tonnes for power tools and electric bicycles by 2021. However, with the growing demand for electric vehicles and energy storage systems (ESS) batteries, the company has sold an additional 200,000 tonnes since 2022 . NCA cathode material was the first product developed by EcoPro after it entered the secondary battery industry in 2004. Known for its 20-30 per cent higher energy density compared to the widely used NCM...

The aluminium industry has long sold itself as the ‘metal of the future’, well known for being lightweight, infinitely recyclable, and indispensable for decarbonisation in transport, construction and packaging. Yet, when scrutinised from a life-cycle perspective, the path from bauxite to ingot reveals an environmental footprint that is both energy-heavy and highly variable depending on geography. A landmark cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) conducted by the International Aluminium Institute (IAI) brings forth one blunt truth, i.e., electricity supply is the single biggest determinant of aluminium’s environmental impact. Image source: https://www.researchgate.net/ The study, built on IAI’s global survey data and modelled using GaBi software, measured six core impact categories...
