Once completed, the modernisation valued at 500 million roubles (US$5.62 million) will enhance the mill's automation systems and increase the output of thin gauge foil (less than 9 microns thick) by 10–12 per cent. These ultra-thin foils are essential for advanced food packaging solution, including confectionery wraps, aseptic cartons, and laminated materials.

Meanwhile, RUSAL's Ural Foil plant is entering this segment for the first time, marking a significant step forward in its production capabilities.

'In developed economies, quality food packaging is essential for a country's food security. The packaging sector is substituting for imports and developing fast, and RUSAL synchronises its foil projects with the sectoral trends. In addition to upgrading the С-3/2 finishing mill, we are planning further investment in producing thin gauge foil at SAYANAL. Also, for the first time in its history, the Ural Foil plant is starting to embark on this advanced production', said Alexey Agafonov, head of RUSAL Foil block.

Using thin gauge foils in packaging offers multiple advantages, including reduced overall packaging weight and cost, improved efficiency in the final product, and enhanced quality for consumers. SAYANAL produces ultra-thin aluminium foil as slim as 6 microns (0.006 mm), which still delivers excellent barrier properties, effectively protecting food from light, air, and odours to preserve freshness and extend shelf life.
