On Tuesday, May 27th, Dong-A Otsuka (CEO Park Chul-ho) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Novelis Korea, the world's leading aluminium rolling and recycling company. The partnership aims to promote resource recycling and sustainability for THE Masinda, Dong-A Otsuka's canned drinking water product, in alignment with its role as an official sponsor of the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting.
As part of the agreement, Dong-A Otsuka will add QR codes to the packaging of THE Masinda products. These cans are made from aluminium sheets with a high recycled content, produced at Novelis' Yeongju facility. Recycling aluminium saves up to 95 per cent of the energy and greenhouse gas emissions compared to primary production from bauxite.
These QR codes will serve as a direct channel to educate consumers about:
In line with the partnership, Novelis will actively engage in various sustainability-focused events, promote using aluminium cans, and carry out campaigns highlighting the importance of resource recycling and aluminium's circular benefits. These efforts reflect Novelis' commitment to its '3x30 Vision' and contribute to advancing a more sustainable future.
Dong-A Otsuka President and CEO Park Chul-ho said, "We are delighted to be working with Novelis, a global leader in aluminium rolling and recycling, on this meaningful collaboration in conjunction with our official sponsorship of APEC. Through this agreement, we expect to be able to effectively deliver the message of resource recycling and sustainability contained in 'THE Masinda' to more consumers."
This agreement is part of a broader sustainability campaign focused on reducing plastic usage and showcasing the superior recyclability of aluminium cans. Together, the two companies will share their message both in Korea and globally, using THE Masinda as a platform to support the development of a more circular, resource-efficient society.
Dong-A Otsuka introduced THE Masinda, its canned drinking water product, in September last year. The company continues to advance its sustainable management strategy focused on environmental protection and resource conservation by using highly recyclable aluminium cans. The company will supply its beverages, including THE Masinda, to a range of ministerial events, beginning with the 3rd Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM 3) and related sessions.
