The Aluminium Federation (ALFED) has launched a new Reindustrialising UK Aluminium briefing, developed through its Trade Committee, setting out the immediate trade and industrial priorities facing the UK aluminium sector. The briefing comes as aluminium takes on increasing strategic importance within UK Government policy. Aluminium is recognised within the UK’s Critical Minerals framework and as a Growth Mineral, reflecting its importance to future UK manufacturing and economic growth. Government’s Critical Minerals Strategy describes critical minerals as foundational inputs to the Industrial Strategy’s growth-driving sectors. ALFED’s latest economic modelling estimates that the UK aluminium industry supports a wider economic footprint of £8.18 billion (USD 11.03 billion) in GVA and...
European Aluminium and the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) are calling on the European Parliament and the Council to make low-carbon aluminium eligible alongside steel under the proposed material-credit mechanism for vehicle CO2 standards. The joint industry statement focuses on the revision of Regulation (EU) 2019/631, under proposal 2025/0420 (COD). The two organisations want both materials covered by a single, technology-neutral mechanism with harmonised carbon-intensity thresholds and verification rules. They said the approach would give automakers greater flexibility in meeting regulatory requirements while supporting European markets for low-carbon materials. It would also allow vehicle engineers to continue selecting materials based on technical and economic...

[Aluminum Morning Meeting Summary: Macro Tailwinds and Inventory Buildup Clash, Aluminum Prices Move Sideways Awaiting Consumption Guidance] Recently on the macro front, global trade tensions have continued to ease, and domestic industrial profits have shown ongoing recovery, especially with significant improvement in high-tech manufacturing profits, supporting expectations for aluminium semis demand; overseas interest rate cut expectations are also favourable for risk asset preferences. The demand side remains the core focus of the market going forward, with some companies already starting to stockpile for the upcoming peak season orders. Domestic downstream operating rates for aluminium have slightly rebounded, but as aluminium prices recover, terminal shipments have declined again, and...

China's imports of aluminium scrap during January-July totalled 1.17 million tonnes, higher by a significant 8.4 per cent compared with the same period last year, according to the latest data released by the country's General Administration of Customs (GACC). The persistently tight availability of aluminium scrap in China, plus expanding demand for scrap among domestic secondary aluminium manufacturers, were both behind the import rush so far this year, Mysteel Global noted. In July alone, China's aluminium scrap imports ended a two-month drop and rebounded by 3.1 per cent from June to reach 160,495 tonnes, the GACC data showed. The volume had also jumped 18.7 per cent from the same month last year. Although the country's aluminium industry last month was still in the usual seasonal lull...

Chandrayaan-3 is back in the spotlight, and it's making waves in the world of space exploration! India's historic Moon mission, which landed on the Moon's South Pole on August 23, 2023, continues to uncover groundbreaking secrets of our celestial neighbour. Thanks to the Pragyan rover, scientists confirmed the presence of aluminium for the first time at the Moon's South Pole. But that's just the tip of the iceberg, as other elements like calcium, iron, chromium, titanium, manganese, silicon, and oxygen were also detected with the help of the rover's powerful spectrometers, offering fresh insights into the Moon's surface dynamics and hinting at the potential for water ice reserves, as reported by CNBCTV18. The mission has detected about 250 seismic signals in the region, with at least 50...

India’s renewable energy sector experienced USD 11.8 billion in financial investment in the first half of 2025, which is the second-highest half-year inflow in history, according to the latest reports. The momentum is indicative of India's increasing prominence in the global clean energy arena, spurred by an uptick of solar projects and consistent investor confidence. Image source: https://commons.wikimedia.org/ Clean energy auctions and regulatory landscape Clean power auctions were a critical growth lever. India is already one of the world's most active renewable markets, having approved 59 gigawatts (AC) of capacity in 2024, which is more than twice as much as the year before. Auctions provide revenue certainty and allow private developers to scale with long-term visibility. However,...

On Tuesday, Mysteel's assessments on spot prices for metallurgical-grade alumina with purity above 98.6 per cent in Shandong, Henan, and Guizhou provinces declined by RMB 10 per tonne (USD 1.4 per tonne) from Monday, averaging RMB 3,190–3,310 per tonne. Meanwhile, the assessed prices for the same grade in Guangxi autonomous region eased by RMB 5 per tonne to RMB 3,320 per tonne, snapping a 19-day stability, and those in Shanxi province fell by a larger RMB 15 per tonne to sit at RMB 3,210/t. The broad price decline reflected lower offers and trading prices seen in most alumina-producing hubs since late Monday, according to market watchers. With uncertainty over the impact of production restrictions ahead of the September 3 military parade in Beijing, some alumina sellers holding...

Tariff or no tariffs - the United States’ renewed trade stance aluminium imports is affecting many countries and their domestic industries for sure. If the countries facing the staggering 50 per cent tariff from the US administration are suffering from poor export orders, sluggish economy, and job loss, the same countries are also suffering from the same for aluminium scrap being exempted from tariffs. How? The exemption on aluminium scrap is bleeding the countries off their resources as most of them are diverting to the US. Europe, for example, is suffering from a similar situation, leaving local recycling plants fight for survival. Firstly, the scrap leakage from the EU is creating a void in the domestic market, wherein it is an important source of raw material for producing low-carbon...

India’s energy transition is not a linear march from coal to renewables. It is a high-wire act where efficiency, geopolitics, and industrial decarbonisation collide. From the creation of a revolving fund for energy efficiency to the scramble for discounted Russian oil, and from solar and hydrogen pushes to aluminium’s green makeover, the country’s choices are shaping both domestic industry and global trade flows. Image source: JMK Research Revolving capital, not one-off grants At the heart of India’s efficiency strategy is the Energy Efficiency Revolving Fund (EERF), seeded with USD 13 million from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Managed by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the fund deploys capital into efficient motors,...

North India, with its fast-growing industrial ecosystem, is expanding its industrial hub, which has now become the foundation of the country's aluminium extrusion sector. Cities like Delhi-NCR, Haryana's automobile hubs, Rajasthan's engineering clusters and rising real estate sectors spanning across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, are growing as a crucial part of India's aluminium supply chain. Major sectors like solar panel manufacturing, infrastructure and construction are the dominant consumers of India's aluminium extrusions. Alongside these sectors, the burgeoning real-estate market, especially in the Delhi-NCR area, is increasing the demand for aluminium extrusion for architectural profiles, likely doors, curtain walls and windows. The demand is also further spurring from...

India’s free trade agreement with the UK is expected to be a big win for aluminium exporters, as it will remove the import duties. But there is also a catch. From January 2027, the UK will bring in its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) — a tax linked to carbon emissions. Industry executives warn this could claw back much of the benefit, leaving Indian producers struggling to keep prices competitive in the British market. Role of FTA The FTA eliminates import duties on aluminium products, which previously ranged from 2 per cent to 10 per cent in the UK market. Industry players expect this change will improve India’s competitiveness. Vedanta Aluminium Chief Executive Officer Rajiv Kumar said, “With the FTA now in place, the aluminium industry aims to treble its export to the UK by...
