Fraunhofer IWU develops aluminium foam panels to keep cargo ships moving in low water
Fraunhofer IWU is developing lightweight aluminium foam sandwich panels that could help inland cargo vessels continue operating when low water levels force conventional ships to reduce their loads or risk running aground. The proposed shipbuilding structure could reduce vessel weight by approximately 30 per cent compared with conventional shipbuilding steel. During low-water periods, this could allow vessels to carry up to 30 per cent more cargo relative to their net weight, or transport the same cargo while navigating in shallower water. The approach could offer an alternative to two difficult choices facing European freight networks: deepening river channels, which can raise environmental concerns, or shifting heavy cargo to roads, which would increase pressure on already busy routes...

The centre of gravity of the global aluminium extrusion market is increasingly difficult to locate anywhere but Asia. China already sits at a scale that no other extrusion-producing country approaches. AL Circle's The World of Aluminium Extrusions – Industry Forecast to 2030 estimated China's aluminium extrusion usage at 20.94 million tonnes in 2023, against global consumption of approximately 31.5 million tonnes. PV aluminium extrusion: This week, the operating rate of the surveyed industry sample of PV frame enterprises held up well. Leading extrusion manufacturers continued to run at full capacity, supported by ample long-term orders on hand, with the core driver being the advancement of centralised PV projects toward year-end. In H2, the production schedule situation for downstream leading module enterprises is expected to be better than H1, but monthly incremental growth in PV frame demand will be steady M-o-M, limiting the extent of demand improvement. GAIL announces 600 MW solar project in Uttar Pradesh
GAIL (India) Limited has entered into agreements to develop a 600 MW solar power project in Uttar Pradesh, the company said on April 15, 2026. The project will come up at a solar park near Jhansi, with TUSCO Limited acting as the developer. The agreements were signed by Parivesh Chugh, executive director (strategic development and renewables) at GAIL, and Anil Tyagi, chief executive officer of TUSCO. Scientists have found a new method to make aluminium more resistant to high temperatures. The work, published in Nature Communications, takes its cue from reinforced concrete.
