RUSAL becomes the first foreign company to earn China's Green Power Aluminium Certificate

RUSAL, one of the world's largest aluminium producers, has become the first company to accomplish the Green Power Aluminium certification procedures.

On September 9-12, an evaluation team from the China Non-ferrous Metal Industry Association (CNIA) Green Product Certification Center, led by Ma Cunzhun, Head of the Green Product Evaluation Centre, embarked on their first international certification visit. The goal was to assess RUSAL, one of the largest aluminium producers globally.

Two major plants, the Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter (KrAZ) and the Bratsk Aluminium Smelter (BrAZ), each with production capacities exceeding 1 million tons per year, were visited and certified by the delegation. Compliance with the regulatory standards set by the Green Power Aluminium initiative was confirmed at both certified facilities.

Ma Cunzhen, Head of the Green Product Evaluation Centre of CNIA, said, "As we advance the evaluation of green electricity aluminium and related initiatives, we are pleased to see that RUSAL aligns with our vision and develops in tandem with us. As a leading enterprise in global electrolytic aluminium production, RUSAL plays a crucial role in the green and low-carbon development of the aluminium industry worldwide. Over 99 per cent of RUSAL's electricity comes from renewable sources. The products from RUSAL, once evaluated and certified, will offer Chinese customers low-carbon aluminium with a clear and traceable carbon footprint, meeting the industry's demand. It is well-known that China has a significant market demand for sustainable, green, and low-carbon products.”

RUSAL has become the first foreign company to receive the China Green Power Aluminium Certificate. This certification emphasises using renewable energy sources (such as solar, hydro, wind, and geothermal) to produce primary aluminium. The certification process occurs in two stages: a remote evaluation based on submitted information, followed by an in-person visit to the production sites.

This certification strengthens RUSAL's standing as a green-power aluminium producer, enhancing its reputation with Chinese authorities as a reliable supplier. Additionally, it marks a significant milestone as the first international company to receive this recognition. Moreover, RUSAL's low-carbon aluminium is being exported to several Asian countries.

The China Green Product Evaluation Centre presented the first certificate at a special event in Shanghai on July 2, 2024.
