Hydro opens the Usina da Paz community center in the Tomé-Açu municipality, marking the seventh community center delivered with the Government of Pará under the TerPaz programme. The initiative reinforces Hydro’s community engagement in Brazil and supports a long-term commitment to expanding access to essential services across the State of Pará.

The opening in the Tomé-Açu municipality expands access to public services and structured activities for local residents, and contributes to long-term community development across Pará.

“The opening of the community center in Tomé-Açu reflects our long-standing presence in Pará and our commitment to supporting local socioeconomic development in the communities where we operate. By bringing essential services together in one place, the center will help improve access to support, opportunities for local residents and contribute to stronger, more inclusive communities,” says John Thuestad, Executive Vice President for Hydro Bauxite & Alumina.

Hydro’s investment and commitment in Pará

With the opening of Tomé-Açu community center, Hydro has contributed to the delivery of seven community centers under the Territórios Pela Paz (TerPaz) programme, in partnership with the Government of Pará. Hydro has invested NOK 900 million (approximately BRL 480 million) in the construction of the centers across the state, including NOK 130 million (approximately BRL 70 million) in the development of the Tomé-Açu community center.

The seven centers are located in Belém (three units), Moju, Barcarena, Paragominas and Tomé-Açu, with the potential to serve more than 1.8 million people in municipalities in Pará by expanding access to essential services and reinforcing social infrastructure.

According to the state of Pará, the TerPaz programme has so far delivered more than 11.1 million services and up to a 90 percent reduction in Intentional Lethal Violent Crimes (CVLI) in the areas where it operates.

Bringing essential public services together in Tomé-Açu

The Tomé-Açu community center is a modern, multifunctional center designed to bring essential public services together in one place, supporting the well being of local residents. The center consists of two buildings and offers free services in health care, legal support, education, and training. It also offers a space for sports, an Olympic size swimming pool as well as access to computers and digital services.

During the construction phase, the Tomé-Açu community center also stimulated the local economy, generating 300 jobs at the peak of construction, 90 per cent of which were filled by local professionals, directly benefiting residents of the municipality.

Tomé-Açu is one of the municipalities along Hydro’s 244 kilometer slurry pipeline, which transports bauxite slurry from Paragominas to the Alunorte refinery.
