The European Union (EU) Parliament is set to hold a non-binding vote this week on whether Aughinish Alumina should be included in the framework of the EU’s sanctions on Russia. The move adds further political pressure on Ireland as it begins its six-month presidency of the EU Council.
{alcircleadd}The vote follows amendment proposals submitted by the European People's Party (EPP) and the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) groups ahead of Parliament's debate on the 2025 European Commission Report on Ukraine in Strasbourg.

Both amendments call for tougher trade restrictions, including "a full ban on Russian steel products and on the export of alumina to Russia."
The proposed amendments will be debated on Tuesday before Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) cast their votes later in the week.
Although the outcome will not be legally binding, it is expected to intensify scrutiny of Ireland's handling of the Aughinish Alumina issue, particularly as the debate comes just hours after Taoiseach Micheál Martin addresses the Parliament to present Ireland's priorities for its EU presidency, which runs until December.
Speaking at an EU presidency event at University College Cork, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the matter rests with Ireland. She is awaiting the government's report examining whether products manufactured at the Russian-owned refinery in County Limerick have been used in Russian defence equipment.
At the official launch of Ireland's EU presidency in Dublin last week, Martin said that the report is expected within the coming weeks and expressed confidence that the issue would not overshadow Ireland's presidency.
Attention is also expected to focus on how Ireland's 14 MEPs vote on the proposed amendments, with European Parliament political groups due to determine their recommended voting positions before the parliamentary session.
