Vedanta Aluminium has recently announced that it has signed long-term power delivery agreements to obtain 1335 MW of renewable energy for its operations. The firm will use a combination of solar and wind energy to power its operations across Odisha and Chhattisgarh while reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.
Through these agreements, the firm aims to cut around 3.2 million tonnes of CO2 per year. This is a significant step towards Vedanta's decarbonisation efforts.

As part of the initiative launched in 2004 by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Akshay Urja Diwas aims to promote the adoption of renewable energy sources through technological innovation and decentralised power production. The initiative focuses on the adoption of various kinds of renewable energy forms, including solar, wind, and biofuels.
Vedanta Aluminium is also exploring the use of biofuels to run its operations. The firm has started using biomass pellets and briquettes produced from agriculture residue to fuel its operations across various locations, including BALCO (Chhattisgarh), Jharsuguda (Odisha), and Lanjigarh (Odisha). The use of biofuels has resulted in a reduction of 16.07 tonnes of CO2 emissions over the past two years.
As part of its effort to achieve Net Zero by 2050, Vedanta Aluminium is adopting a three-pronged approach towards decarbonising its operations. The firm is increasing the quantum of renewable energy in its energy mix, boosting its operational efficiencies to reduce energy consumption, and transitioning to low carbon, cleaner fuels and technologies.
The firm claims to be the first in India to offer low carbon, 'green' aluminium, branded Restora and Restora Ultra for its global customer base. Many of these customers focus on ensuring the sustainable provenance of their materials. The firm was India's largest industrial consumer of renewable energy in the financial year 2022, procuring nearly 3 billion units.

Vedanta Aluminium has successfully conserved over 1.36 million gigajoules of energy in the last financial year. In addition, the firm commissioned the country's largest fleet of lithium-ion battery-powered EV forklifts, leading to a potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually. In the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) 2022 world rankings for the aluminium industry, Vedanta Aluminium ranked second.
