US aluminium scrap exports record 1% dip Q-o-Q in 3Q2022; export from Malaysia plunge 31% sequentially

The United States aluminium scrap export volume dipped in September 2022 by 8,000 tonnes or 4.50 per cent, following a rise in the previous quarter, found the US Census Bureau data. From 178,000 tonnes in August, the United States aluminium scrap export decreased to 170,000 tonnes in the succeeding month. The export in August had grown by 14.84 per cent month-on-month from 155,000 tonnes.

So, with the ups and downs through the third quarter of 2022, the total aluminium scrap export volume from the United States amounted to 503,000 tonnes, 1.18 per cent or 6,000 tonnes less than 509,000 tonnes in Q2.

On a year-on-year calculation, the United States aluminium scrap exports in September 2022 edged a slight dip of 1,000 tonnes from 171,000 tonnes to 170,000 tonnes.

In the first nine months of 2022, the United States aluminium scrap exports totalled 1.510 million tonnes, muted compared to the previous year.

Malaysia, the highest aluminium scrap importer from the US, hauled 42,000 tonnes in September’22 – 9.87 per cent less than 46,600 tonnes a month ago and 800 tonnes more than 41,200 tonnes a year earlier, showed USGS.

In Q3, the United States scrap exports to Malaysia stood at 122,600 tonnes, down by 31.32 per cent quarter-on-quarter from 84,200 tonnes.

From January to September, the US aluminium scrap exports to Malaysia came in at 291,000 tonnes – 9,000 tonnes less than 380,000 tonnes during the same period last year.
