United States declining bauxite imports in 2025: A critical overview

The United States has long been a net importer of bauxite, owing to the small domestic reserves located in Arkansas, Alabama, and Georgia. This trend has not changed much except the numbers going up or down in 2025. Jamaica and Turkey, the only two primary exporters of bauxite to the US, have remained firm, albeit the amount dropped year-on-year, leading to the decline in the United States’ total bauxite imports.

Factors driving the decline in the US bauxite imports

The erosion of alumina refining capacity in the domestic market from 5 million tonnes in 2000 to nearly 600,000 tonnes today has practically reduced the demand for bauxite in the United States. At present, only one refinery - Atlantic Alumina’s Gramercy plant in Louisiana is running but at its one-third capacity, producing around 500,000 to 600,000 tonnes annually. Moreover, the United States’ constant shift towards secondary aluminium, with scrap recovery reaching 3.62 million tonnes by the end of 2025, has altered the requirement of aluminium input from bauxite to scrap.

Hence, the direct impact on import volume

In 2025, the United States’ bauxite imports stood at 1.71 million tonnes – down by 17.3 per cent Y-o-Y from 2.08 million tonnes. Although the volumes in some quarters like Q3 and Q4 tried to offset the fall, but the consistent annual decline through each quarter resisted the chance. After a quarter-on-quarter fall in Q2 2025 from 480,000 tonnes to 369,000 tonnes, import volume increased to 403,000 tonnes in Q3 and 459,000 tonnes in Q4, recording an increase of 9.2 per cent and 13.9 per cent, respectively. However, the import volumes in Q3 and Q4 could neither be able to touch the figure in Q1 nor could come above 553,000 tonnes in Q3 2024 and 500,000 tonnes in Q4 2024. In fact, the import volume in the first two quarters of 2025 stood below what was achieved during Q1 and Q2 of 2024, recording an annual fall of 4.2 per cent and 30 per cent.

So, the above data suggests the sharp fall in Q2 contributed the highest to the decline in the United States’ annual fall in bauxite imports.
