According to aluminium recycling statistics published by the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of Interior, the U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 367 thousand tonnes of aluminium scrap during October 2017, slightly off from the October 2016 total of 735 million.

USGS estimates that recovery of aluminium and aluminium alloys totalled 303 thousand tonnes in October 2017, a slight drop from that in September 2017 and October 2016. Of this amount, 172,000 tonne of aluminium was recovered from new scrap and 131,000 tonne was recovered from old scrap.

Through October of 2017, preliminary data indicate that recovery of aluminium from scrap totalled an estimated 3.36 million tonnes, up 2% over the 2016 YTD total of 3.30 million tonnes. U.S. exports of scrap, not included in the government’s consumption statistics, totalled 1.4 million tonnes through October, up 14.5% over the same period of 2016. In October itself exports of scrap increased 30.3%YoY to 175 thousand tonnes.
Domestic primary aluminium production in October 2017 was 63,000 metric tons (t). The average daily production in October was 2,020 t, essentially unchanged from that in September 2017 and slightly more than that in October 2016.
