
According to aluminium recycling statistics published by the U.S. Geological Survey and Department of Interior, the U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 782 million pounds of aluminium scrap during September 2016. This is 5.5 per cent more than the September 2015 total of 741 million.
USGS estimates that the total aluminium recovered from scrap in September 2016 was 302,000 tons, down 3% from the revised amount recovered in August 2016 but 6% more than that in September 2015. Of this, 169,000 tons of aluminium was recovered from new scrap down slightly MOM but 5% more than the amount recovered in September 2015. About 133,000 ton was recovered from old scrap, 4% MOM, but 7% more from the amount in September 2015.

According to the preliminary data, during the first three quarters of 2016, recovery of aluminium from scrap totalled an estimated 2.9 million tons, up 5.9 per cent from the same period total of 2.8 million tons. U.S. exported about 1.1 million tons of scrap during the first three quarters of 2016, down 14.1 per cent from the same period in 2015.
U.S. secondary aluminium production in the first 9 months of the year was 6% higher than that in the same period in 2015.
