Turla and the role of aluminium extrusion equipment in modern manufacturing

Industrial Aluminium Profiles

Aluminium extrusion is one of the most important downstream processes in the aluminium value chain, involving forcing heated aluminium alloy billets through a die to produce a variety of profiles. These extruded products are widely used in construction, transportation, electrical systems, renewable energy, consumer goods and industrial applications.

As extrusion plants face increasing pressure to reduce costs, improve sustainability and meet demanding customer specifications, equipment suppliers have become strategic technology partners rather than merely machinery manufacturers.

Within this segment of the aluminium industry, Italy-based Turla has made its mark as a supplier of complete extrusion systems and related technologies for aluminium profile producers worldwide.

Founded in 1967 in Paderno Franciacorta near Brescia, northern Italy, Turla specialises in the design and manufacture of aluminium extrusion equipment. Over more than five decades, the company has evolved from a supplier of profile handling systems into a manufacturer capable of delivering complete and eco-friendly aluminium extrusion lines.

Dedicated to “Reliability,” “Innovation” and “Continuous Evolution,” the company designs, manufactures, assembles and pre-installs complete extrusion systems within its own facilities before shipment, allowing greater control over quality, testing and system integration.

A notable aspect of its engineering approach is the development of complete extrusion lines rather than stand-alone machines. This allows customers to source an integrated system from a single supplier, covering equipment before the press, the extrusion process itself and downstream profile handling operations.

Product portfolio

Turla's activities cover the entire extrusion process, from billet preparation to finished profile handling.

Its portfolio includes:

  • Ageing oven, to precipitate alloying elements
  • Cooling table, to handle extrusions during cooling and transfer them to the stretcher area
  • Extrusion press, to shape heated aluminium billets into long profiles
  • Finishing saw, to cut the lengths of profile batches
  • Gauge table, to support profile batches while measuring and finishing the cut
  • Hot saw, to cut logs down to billets
  • Lead out table, to support profiles during the extrusion process
  • Log gas heated furnace SteP5, designed as a tunnel-type system, to move logs on idle rollers, with material being pushed from the back of the furnace
  • Log hot saw, to cut logs into billets as per preset length specifications
  • Profile stacker, a fully automated handling system designed to lift, separate, align and stack aluminium extrusion profiles into organised layers using spacers
  • Puller, to maintain controlled movement of extruded profiles and line them up for the stretcher
  • Quench, to reduce temperature by direct air blow on the extruded profile
  • Scrap system, to cut the scrap into pieces via hydraulic shearing
  • Stretcher, to stretch profiles after cooling to keep them straight

Turla provides not only mechanical equipment but also advanced extrusion software, electrical systems and process-control solutions for extrusion plants.

The company has increasingly focused on automation, new technical solutions, as well as advanced materials and optimised production techniques. It has introduced energy-saving concepts aimed at reducing operating costs and improving process consistency. Its research and development activities are centred on extending equipment life, improving reliability and enhancing plant efficiency.

Global footprint

Headquartered in Italy, Turla serves a broad international customer base. Among notable collaborations with leading extrusion groups, so far, the company has supplied 52 installations to Norsk Hydro.

Turla has completed approximately 390 projects worldwide, serving around 150 customers, 54 extrusion presses and 76 complete production lines.
