Top five aluminium exporters to the US in June 2019

The US imports of aluminium (crude metals and alloys, plate, sheets, bars, etc., and scrap) stood at 500,000 tonnes in June 2019, 8.7% or 40,000 tonnes more than that in June 2018, according to the latest Mineral Industry Survey report from US Geological Survey.

Canada continued to be the leading source of imported aluminium materials, supplying 44.8 % of all aluminium imports in June 2019, followed by the United Arab Emirates (6.6%), Russia (5%), Australia (4.66%), and Mexico (3.5%).

Canada exported 224,000 tonnes of total aluminium to the US in June 2019, down 2.61% from 230,000 tonnes exported in June 2018. But exports increased 32.54% month-on-month. Exports of crude metals and alloys, semi-finished products, and scrap were down 1.12%, 9.84%, and 6% YoY to stand at 176,000 tonnes, 16,500 tonnes, and 31,300 tonnes respectively in June. Total exports came in at 1.150 million tonnes in the first half of 2019.

UAE stood second with the export of 33,000 tonnes of aluminium in June 2019, down 22.54% year-on-year and 23.08% month-on-month. Exports of crude metals and alloys, semi-finished products, and scrap were 32,700 tonnes, 169 tonnes, and 98 tonnes in June. That was down 22.51%, 39.64%, and 9.26% YoY. Total exports stood at 253,000 tonnes in the first half of 2019.

Russia stood third in the list with the export of 25,000 tonnes. Exports jumped 295.57% from 6,320 tonnes in June 2018 and 21.36% from 20,600 tonnes in May 2019. Russia exported 23,200 tonnes and 1,850 tonnes of crude metals and alloys and semi-finished products in June. Exports came in at 122,000 in the first six months of 2019.

Australia exported 23,300 tonnes of aluminium to the US, up 339.62% from 5,300 tonnes in June 2018. But down 7.91% month-on-month. Exports of crude metals and alloys and semi-finished products were 23,200 tonnes and 50 tonnes. Australia exported 158,000 tonnes of aluminium in January-June 2019. Mexico’s exports of aluminium to the US stood at 17,500 tonnes in June, down 25.85% YoY and 4.89% MoM. Exports of semi-finished products and scrap were 3,020 tonnes and 14,500 tonnes.
