Tsingshan Holding Group has applied to make aluminium produced by its Hua Chin smelting joint venture in Indonesia deliverable on the London Metal Exchange, according to a notice issued by the London Metal Exchange.

If approved, Hua Chin would become only the second Indonesian high-grade primary aluminium brand accepted by the LME after state-owned Inalum.

Hua Chin is a joint venture between Tsingshan and the Chinese company Huafon Group. The smelting facility is located on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

According to the LME notice, the second phase of the Hua Chin facility started operations this year and has an annual production capacity of 480,000 tonnes of aluminium ingots.

The application comes as Indonesia continues to expand aluminium production and exports. Additional supply from the country could help ease global market tightness linked to disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East.

Tsingshan is widely known as the world’s largest nickel producer. Nickel cathodes produced by its Indonesian affiliate, PT Eternal Nickel Industry, are already approved for delivery against the LME nickel contract.
