
Aluminum imports of ingot, scrap and mill products into the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) totalled 362 thousand tonnes in February 2018, up 5 per cent over the February 2017 total of 344 thousand tonnes.
U.S. exports of scrap, which is not included in the government’s consumption statistics, totalled 1.6 million tonnes in 2017, up 18.3 per cent over 2016. For the first two months of 2018, the total aluminium scrap export by the U.S. is estimated to stand at about 240 thousand tonnes, up 9.2 % from the same period of 2016.

Total exports by the U.S. in January-February stood at 490 thousand tonnes, up 14.5 per cent over a year ago. Scraps account for roughly 50 per cent of reported aluminium exports by the U.S. Excluding scrap; exports totalled 463 thousand tonnes. Exports of scrap increased 18 per cent year-over year in February. Through the first two months of 2018, imports were up 2.4 per cent to 1,659 million pounds, while exports were up 14.5 per cent to 1,081 million pounds.
While export of scrap registered an increase, import registered a drop. For the first two months of 2018, the total aluminium scrap import by the U.S. is estimated to stand at about 38 thousand tonnes, a drop of about 40% from the same period of 2016. Total import stood at 753 thousand tonnes for the first two months, up 2.4 % from the same period of 2016.
