Thailand authorities uncover massive aluminium dross seizure in Nakhon Pathom, exposing illegal smelting ring

EDITED BY : RUPANKAR MAJUMDER 2MINS READ

Thailand's Nakhon Pathom province underwent a significant law enforcement operation over the weekend. Police and industrial officials uncovered 14,400 tonnes of aluminium dross at two remelting facilities. The discovery, spread across sites in Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon provinces, just outside Bangkok, highlights a troubling environmental and industrial malpractice case.

The operation was initiated by Pol Col Arun Wacharasisukanya, deputy commander of the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division, who detailed the sequence of events leading to the discovery. It began when highway police in Nakhon Pathom stopped a semi-trailer truck carrying large quantities of aluminium dross without the required permits. En route to an aluminium factory in Samut Sakhon's Muang district, the truck led authorities to Taibao Aluminium Co. in the quiet Bang Krachao area.

Authorities found 1,400 bags containing 2,100 tonnes of aluminium dross at the factory. The factory appeared deserted, and hot aluminium bars were abandoned inside, suggesting recently halted operations.

Further investigations took officials to another smelting facility in Prong Maduea, Nakhon Pathom. There, they uncovered an even larger cache of 12,387 tonnes of aluminium dross, along with more aluminium bars. This factory was operating illegally, defying a closure order issued by the Department of Industrial Works in April.

Authorities suspect Chinese nationals of involvement in these illicit operations, and Pol Col Arun vows to bring those responsible to justice. Aluminium dross poses significant dangers, as its particles can contaminate air and water, leading to severe health risks, including irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory systems.

The investigation continues as officials work to fully unravel the extent of these illegal operations in Samut Sakhon. This operation underscores the dedication of Thai law enforcement to rooting out environmental crimes and holding those responsible accountable.
