EDITED BY : RUPANKAR MAJUMDER 2MINS READ

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) manufacturing sector is undergoing a significant transformation as cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and robotics are integrated into the workplace, often referred to as "Industry 4.0." This evolution is leading to a higher degree of interconnectivity, automation, and data-driven operations within the sector.

This shift isn't merely enhancing efficiency and productivity; it also possesses the potential to support the GCC's endeavours towards economic diversification. Furthermore, it can position the region as a formidable contender in the manufacturing industry, opening up fresh employment prospects and fundamentally reshaping the area's economic landscape.

The Gulf region's strategic positioning at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa has elevated its status as a pivotal global centre for manufacturing.

Prominent local enterprises such as Aluminium Bahrain, BFG International in Bahrain, Emirates Global Aluminium, and AquaChemie in the UAE are swiftly gaining prominence on the global stage. Meanwhile, multinational corporations like Mondelez and Honeywell invest substantially in the region. These developments have led to significant expansion in Bahrain's manufacturing sector by 4.9 per cent in 2022, an impressive 8.7 per cent increase in manufacturing production in the UAE, and a remarkable 18.5 per cent uptick in Saudi Arabia's manufacturing activity in December 2022 compared to the previous year.

The impending wave of digital transformation and the advent of Industry 4.0 are poised to accelerate this growth further.

Digital Transformation in the Aluminium Industry

Enterprises throughout the region are increasingly acknowledging the potential benefits of digital transformation. Both consumers and businesses in this area are strongly inclined toward technology and innovation, with a notable 80 per cent of companies in the broader MENA region actively integrating digital technologies into their operations. Projections indicate a swift surge in investments dedicated to digital transformation, with estimates indicating a climb from $38.4 billion in 2022 to a substantial $298.2 billion by 2032.

Prominent sectors, including aluminium production, refining, petrochemicals, and other advanced manufacturing industries, have spearheaded the adoption of these cutting-edge technologies. AL Circle's exclusive industry-focused report, "Digital Transformation in the Aluminium Industry," provides a deeper look into the digital transformation taking place in the GCC's aluminium sector.
