In the upcoming week, Tata Steel will uphold a sustainable packaging discovery it has produced in collaboration with Grupo Calvo at the METPACK 2023 exhibition in Essen, Germany. The new item called Protact will be launched alongside another innovation, the Vuelca Fácil® or 'Easy Flip' aluminium film lid.
Tata Steel's partnership with Grupo Calvo has given birth to this new can format that curtails food waste, induces a circular economy and elevates the standards of lightweight packaging in the beverage sector.
Tata Steel's Protact uses a revolutionary layering of polypropylene (PP) which is compatible with the newly enhanced direct seal module. This technology has been claimed to make a can 24 per cent lighter than the conventional weight.
With the elaborative use of the coating, Grupo Calvo successfully applied its unique Vuelca Fácil® or 'Easy Flip' aluminium film lid technique that allows the can to be safely opened.
In addition to reducing the weight of the container, Tata claims this new format will also permit no food wastage as the insides will be slippery enough for the material to slide entirely. Protact's interior PP coating also keeps the inside of the container protected.
The use of aluminium coincides with the company's goal of creating a sustainable packaging material as it is infinitely recyclable.
The head of marketing packaging at Tata Steel, Huib Simon, exclaimed: "We were delighted to work with Grupo Calvo developing this can. BPA-free Protact is our leading-edge, polymer-coated, food-safe product and has now been extended to include new tailored variants further optimised for efficient and sustainable making. The new variants encompass all formats – two-piece as well as three-piece cans, ends and components."
"Protact's polymer coating system simplifies can-making operations while lowering the environmental footprint, energy and water consumption and eliminating VOC emissions, making it a must-see product at METPACK this year," Simon added.
With pride, the marketing director of Grupo Calvo's Europe division, Martín Barbaresi, stated that Vuelca Fácil, the Calvo brand, has completely changed how tuna or any canned fish is consumed and stored conventionally anywhere in the world.
"We have been shaping the evolution of one of the most widely consumed canned products in our country, with milestones such as low-sodium light tuna and, more recently, light tuna with 50% less fat, as well as Foodie tuna salads with edamame and chickpeas. Today, we continue to drive change with our new Vuelca Fácil packaging," Barbaresi concluded.
