Stadler has intertwined itself in an agreement with VR Group, according to which it needs to provide 20 single-decker FLIRT electric multiple units (EMU) in Finland. The latest trains will flaunt a lightweight aluminium construction making the vehicles sustainable.
{alcircleadd}The four-coach trains will have a capacity for 796 passengers and a total of 356 seats. The lightweight aluminium rakes can reach a speed of 160 kilometres per hour and be utilised for local transportation around the Helsinki and Tampere area. Slowly they will be introduced as intercity commutes.
The contract requires Stadler to deliver additional spare parts with another shipment of 50 multiple units and a full-service extension.
These new trains will act as the skeleton of the VR Group in introducing more sustainable railway activities around Finland. It is greatly due to their electricity-run lightweight aluminium constitution and the recently modified converter technology that the trains will lower the energy consumption rate.
Aluminium can be recycled infinitely without losing the original properties of the non-ferrous metal, making it perfect for fresh use. These trains will have aluminium bodies and also will feature oil-free air compressors, and use propane as a coolant so that most of the assembled components can be recycled at the end of their lives.
Stadler has ample experience in the production of rolling stock for incorrigible climatic conditions. More than 80 FLIRT vehicles have already been optimised in FINLAND, proving to be an incredible addition for the harsh winters.
Like the genre mentioned above, these new rakes are designed to adapt to Nordic weather specifications. Auxiliary equipment includes gigantic snow ploughs and effective air-conditioning technology supporting underfloor heating in the vestibules.
Specially designed insulation and locked traction compartments will also be present to keep the drive technology safe.
The Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing and Deputy Group CEO of Stadler, Ansgar Brockmeyer, commented:
“After supplying 60 locomotives, we’re now proud to be delivering our best-selling FLIRT model to the VR Group.
“The FLIRT train has already proven its versatility and robustness thousands of times – from the Arctic Circle to Africa.
“The new vehicles will provide VR’s commuter traffic passengers with an environmentally friendly, reliable and comfortable travel experience – even in harsh winter weather conditions," he concluded.
The delivery of the first Stadler rake has been scheduled for spring 2026.
