Authorities review records dating back to 2017
According to the government statement, investigators from multiple agencies held their first formal coordination meeting on July 6 to assess the collected documents and identify any other requisite documents for the investigation.
A government statement noted, “The examination of records and documentation has commenced and is yet to be completed.” As the investigation dates back to 2017, it therefore “requires diligent examination.”
The government added that individuals who served in government during the relevant period, such as “the Leader of the Opposition and others who were in government,” including former ministers and senior officials, could be invited to provide information where necessary about “the 33 shipments.”
Government reiterates commitment to an independent process
Sogavare, in statement dated July 7 noted that the Opposition Leader welcomed an investigation into the matter. He emphasised the need to keep the public informed, which would strengthen confidence in the investigation.
He regarded the government’s commitment to maintaining “accountability and transparency” so that the Solomon Islanders would stay updated on “the progress of this important process.”
The Opposition has requested updates on the review of official records, engagement with relevant agencies and companies, any findings relating to royalties or other payments, and the expected timeline for completion.

Investigation remains ongoing
The government has not disclosed whether the Rennell bauxite exports investigation has identified any royalty-related issue, taxes or other payments, stating that releasing such information before the inquiry is completed could affect the process. It has also declined to identify the officials and company representatives assisting investigators. No completion date has been announced.
“While setting a timeframe is important, the Government is cautious not to compromise the quality of the investigation simply to satisfy a random deadline,” the statement said.
Prime Minister Matthew Wale's GREAT Coalition Government has identified the Rennell inquiry as part of its broader commitment to the country's mining sector.
Reaffirming its approach, the government stated, “We remain committed to accountability, transparency and the rule of law while ensuring the investigation proceeds free from political interference and public pressure.”
