Significant aluminum growth forecast for vehicle production: ATG

Aluminum use in each vehicle in North America is expected to grow to 400 lbs in 2015 from 343 lbs in 2012, Brad Soultz, vice president and general manager of Novelis, said Monday at the Platts Aluminum Symposium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on behalf of the Aluminum Transportation Group.

It is expected to increase to 550 lbs in 2025.

Soultz said that these increases would be driven by the desire for fuel efficiency and new, stringent regulations.

"Regulations are going to drive it and consumers require it," Soultz said of the expected rise in aluminum use.

Aluminum is significantly lighter than other materials used in the production of vehicles and is therefore desirable for use in the production of vehicles.

"Generally, lighter is always better," Soultz said.

According to the ATG, 4.5 billion to 5 billion pounds per year of aluminum are used in car production in North America.

Soultz said that the expected growth for aluminum use in North American vehicle production was a conservative forecast.
