Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) recently announced signing a significant framework agreement with Siemens Mobility, valued at more than five billion euros. The deal entails the delivery of up to 540 single-deck electric multiple-unit aluminium trains, which are expected to enter service in 2028.

These trains are developed from the manufacturer's Mireo platform, a modular system that boasts low energy consumption and lightweight aluminium construction, making it an environmentally friendly choice. The Mireo platform is designed as a successor to the 'Mainline' variant of Siemens's Desiro EMUs. It can form trainsets between two and seven cars long, and the railcars can achieve a top speed of up to 160 kilometres per hour (99 mph).
Interestingly, the first Mireo units were launched at the 2016 InnoTrans trade fair, and the German railway operator, DB Regio, was the first to purchase twenty-four three-car trainsets with a passenger capacity of 220 in February 2017. The use of the Mireo platform by ÖBB is a testament to the quality and reliability of these trains, and it is a significant step towards more sustainable and efficient transportation in Austria.
The CEO of Siemens Mobility, Michael Peter, narrated: "Siemens Mobility and ÖBB have long enjoyed a strong and trusting partnership. We are proud to be delivering further development of the Mireo platform to ÖBB for the company's new fleets. With numerous innovations, low energy consumption, and a high level of passenger comfort and convenience, the new Mireo trains will help make ÖBB's local and regional transport even more attractive."
