Imperial Aluminium's anticipated expansion at a former industrial site on Bridge Street is being hampered by asbestos and lead contamination. Imperial Aluminum produces secondary aluminium alloys with facilities to service the Southeast and Midwest.
{alcircleadd}As part of Imperial Aluminium's plans to raze portions of the structure, lead and asbestos must be removed from the former Kepcor/Structural Stoneware building. In order to pay for the cleanup, the company is seeking $105,000 in state grant funding from Carroll County commissioners.
Commissioner Christopher Modranski said, "I think they have some lead-based caulking and some asbestos. They have to do some cleanup before they can utilize the property. The grant will allow them to hire a contractor to remove hazardous material."
The recycler of all types of aluminium scrap into the die cast and foundry alloys, Imperial Aluminium, located at 217 Roosevelt St., is close to the former Kepcor/Structural Stoneware building. However, the vacant structure was acquired by Imperial Aluminium late in 2021.
The Commissioner added, "There is a rundown factory building that is no longer in use. It is helping the company, and it is helping the community. There could potentially be some additional employees hired. It will provide an opportunity for additional growth for Imperial Aluminium."
