After rising incessantly in the last three years, Saudi Arabia’s aluminium scrap export is estimated to reduce in 2019 by about 17 per cent to 142,128 tonnes, compared to 171,488 tonnes in 2018, found the global export-import data. The data also shows that Saudi Arabia’s aluminium scrap export to India is likely to stand lower as well than the previous year by about 43 per cent to 73,800 tonnes.

As the above graph shows, until 2018, Saudi Arabia recorded year-on-year rises in aluminium scrap export. In 2018, the country’s total amount of export came in at 171,488 tonnes after a growth of 10 per cent from 156,499 tonnes in 2017, while its export to India saw a sweeping rise of 95 per cent to 130,048 tonnes. But in 2017, the export amount to India saw an estimated dip of 18 per cent to 66,708 tonnes from 80,950 tonnes in 2016, despite a rise in its total export volume of 41 per cent from 110,636 tonnes in 2016.
In tandem with the estimated decline in Saudi Arabia’s total aluminium scrap export volume as well as the export volume to India, the country’s export values are likely to drop to US$258 million and US$188 million respectively in 2019. In 2018, Saudi Arabia had exported aluminium scrap to the world at the value of US$314 million and particularly to India at US$270 million. This means the values this year are likely to record a drop of 18 per cent and 30 per cent respectively.

In 2018, the values had recorded an increase of 33 per cent and 128 per cent, as Saudi Arabia had generated around US$236 million from its total export and US$118 million from India. In 2016, the country’s export values were at US$153 million and US$128 million, which represent that Saudi Arabia yielded a lesser amount of revenue from aluminium scrap export to India in 2017, as a consequence of the drop in volume.
After India, South Korea is another large importer of aluminium scrap from Saudi Arabia. In 2019, the latter is likely to export 28,371 tonnes at US$32 million. In 2018, Pakistan was the second highest importer of aluminium scrap from Saudi Arabia, securing approximately 15,259 tonnes.
