According to the CEO of aluminium giant Novelis, Phil Martens, the company is preparing to start production of a line of fully-recycled aluminium cans in roughly the next two years. The 100%-recycled beverage can will be manufactured with a single-alloy design rather than with separate alloys for the can body and end sheet. Mr Martens states: ‘It is going to take a few years. Spanish metals recovery company Alumisel is building a €5.5M metal recycling plant in Galicia, Spain. It said the new facility is the first of its kind in Spain and includes an authomatised line for metal classification. The new plant will be located in O Porriño, an extension of the company’s current facilities, and will have advanced technologies for the treatment of metallic waste materials. The plant is due to be fully operational in September this year. It means Aumisel can increase its production capacity by 70%.

But a new MIT analysis finds that this expansion could run into problems unless measures are taken to reduce impurities that can build up as aluminum is recycled over and over again: everything from paint and labels on cans to other metals that are accidentally mixed in. Aluminium packaging recycling rates rose by more than 4% last year, the biggest increase reported so far. According to the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro), the overall recycling rates for aluminium packaging and drinks cans in 2011 was 45%. The figures are based on PRN data from Defra and are combined with data from industry stakeholders and Alupro members. Alupro also says that the recycling rate for drinks cans in the UK reached 60% last year, despite continued growth in sales of drinks cans and an increase in the amount of aluminium packaging on the market. Aluminum products maker Novelis Inc. plans to become the world's largest recycler and is on track to boost its use of recycled aluminum to 50% of raw material by 2020, President and Chief Executive Phil Martens said Tuesday at the American Metal Market Aluminum Summit in New York. A Minnesota company that recycles metal to make aluminum alloy pleaded guilty on Thursday in federal court for failing to report pollutant emissions to the EPA and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), the Department of Justice said. The plea agreement requires Spectro Alloys Corporation, which has an aluminum processing facility in Rosemount, to pay a $500,000 fine and develop, use and maintain effective emission reporting procedures. Spectro Alloys Corp. pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court and was fined $500,000.
