According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Last year saw a sharp drop in aluminium recycling on Curaçao but a significant improvement for plastics, according to the island’s recycling and environmental organisation Green Force. Students and faculty at Wilcox Elementary are turning aluminum into gold. Throughout the year the school collects aluminum beverage cans for “The Great American Can Roundup,” a national recycling competition sponsored by the Can Manufacturer’s Institute. Not only does the competition build friendly rivalry between classrooms, it also teaches students about recycling at the same time. The competition awards cash prizes according to weight — the more cans turned in, the greater the pounds, the larger the prize. Texas A&M and Brazos Valley Recycling were able to divert 45 tons of trash gathered during the home football games at Kyle Field in 2013 away from landfills. On average, trash at each game was recycled at a rate of 41 percent, a 17 percent increase from the previous season. Brazos Valley Recycling signed on in 2012 to head recycling efforts at home football games. The partnership has seen recycling rise to 43 percent of all trash in only two years. The Wilcox Elementary School will collect cans Saturday, Feb. 15, for recycling. Cans will be accepted at the school at 34580 Bainbridge Road, from 9 a.m. to noon as part of the "We Love to Recycle" program. The Federal Government has been urged to protect the aluminium extrusion and steel industry by putting a stop to exportation of scrap metals, as it is hindering growth in the sector. Hundreds of organisations across Scotland have been helped to set up recycling schemes to comply with new regulations. Since the start of the year businesses have been required to separate all waste metal, plastic and card for recycling. The Every Can Counts programme, which focuses on recycling aluminium, said it has helped 332 Scottish organisations become compliant with the regulations. The free scheme is funded by drinks can manufacturers and the recycling industry. It is also supported by Zero Waste Scotland and soft drinks manufacturers like AG Barr.
