According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. The Westhampton Beach Robotics team members recently took advantage of a donated scrap by Gershow Recycling of Medford as they aim to build a 130-pound robot in next 6 months. Gershow says their students visited recently their Medford site and they chose up aluminum scrap to use for building their robot. The team of Westhampton Beach Robotics plans to participate in the upcoming Long Island For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology competition with their robot, "a national program that challenges teams of students and their mentors to design and build a 130 pound robot in a six-week timeframe using a standard kit of parts and a common set of rules."
Qinghai Yellow River Hydropower Recycled Aluminium Co. achieved a reduction of 341 KWs in power consumption for making each tonne of molten aluminium in 2013, China Nonferrous Metals News reported. The company, which is an affiliate of Aluminium Corporation of China (Chinalco) and located in Qinghai region, produced a total of 489,200 tonnes of aluminium, 257,100 tonnes of carbon products last year and also generated 48.79 million kwh of electricity from waste heat, the report said today.

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) today announced the creation of a Law Enforcement Advisory Council, a select group of experienced law enforcement officers, prosecutors and security personnel from around the country with an understanding of the metals theft issue. Defra is in talks with the UK metals industry to start a research project on the amount of metals packaging put onto the UK market. This would be to confirm that the current estimates for aluminium and steel packaging are accurate. UK and EU packaging recycling targets are set on the basis of these figures. MRW understands that a piece of research on the amount of steel packaging put onto the UK market was carried out in early 2013 as part of a private commercial agreement between an organisation and a consultancy. Defra currently estimates that about 165,500 tonnes of aluminium and 640,000 tonnes of steel will be put onto the UK market in 2014. A target of 46% for aluminium and of 73% for steel apply to obligated producers under the Producer Responsibility Regulations.

Rochester Aluminum Smelting Canada Ltd., has acquired aluminum scrap rotary furnace operator Greenway Industries Corp., Concord., Ontario, Canada. Rochester Aluminum, also based in Concord, produces aluminum casting alloys, primary and secondary aluminum shot, granules, cones, pyramids and five-pound notchbar for steel mills, chemical companies, foundries and other customers. Greenway, an aluminum scrap processing facility, is equipped with two tilting rotary furnaces. Already at a high level, the recycling of aluminium packaging in Germany reached a new peak in 2012, according to a study from the CVM Society for Packaging Market Research. A total of 83 500 tonnes of the 93 800 tonnes used, or 89%, was recycled in that year. 'The high rates of recycling show that we have an excellently-functioning package recycling system in Germany,' says Hans-Jürgen Schmidt, managing director of German Aluminium Packaging Recycling (DAVR). China’s aluminium scrap imports stood at 2.5 million tonnes in 2013 and their value was $3.92bn, according to the customs figures. Compared to the 2012 totals of 2.59 million tonnes worth $4.13bn, this is a 3 per cent reduction in the amount of foreign scrap. Imports of aluminium and aluminium products dropped nearly 18 per cent to 960,000 tonnes last year.

He began his scrap processing and trading career with family business J. Sax & Co. of Chelsea in Massachusetts, USA, and went on to work for several other companies, including Barmet Aluminum Corp., Castech Aluminum and Easco Aluminum. North Lincolnshire Council and Leeds City Council have become the latest local authorities to launch Alupro’s “Leave Your Cap On” recycling communications campaign which encourages recyclers to screw the aluminium caps back on glass bottles before recycling. The new campaigns have seen ‘Leave your cap on’ stickers applied to over 870 glass banks across Leeds and 191 in North Lincolnshire.
