According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. New can stock (class) scrap receipts totaled 55.9 million pounds during February 2014, a decrease of 7.0 percent from the February 2013 total of 60.2 million pounds. Compared to the previous month, class scrap receipts declined 6.5 percent from the January 2014 total of 59.9 million pounds. Year-to-date class scrap receipts for 2014 totaled 115.8 million pounds, off 10.9 percent from the 2013 year-to-date total of 130.0 million pounds.

The Netherlands-based Inashco BV and Wheelabrator Technologies Inc., Hampton, N.H., have announced the formation of a new North American-based joint-venture (JV) company dedicated to the recycling of ferrous and nonferrous metals from waste-to-energy processes. The 50/50-owned JV company, Eco Recovery Solutions LLC (ERS), “will use Inashco’s patented and proprietary advanced dry recovery (ADR) technology to enhance the recovery of ferrous and nonferrous metals at waste-to-energy facilities,” the companies say in a news release. UK secondary aluminium ingot prices were broadly flat on Wednesday March 12, as sellers reported better prices from the European market, where a weak euro has deterred UK exports so far this year. Germany's international trade in non-ferrous scrap metals weakened substantially last year. Both import and export volumes decreased, according to recently released figures from the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). On the export side, the plunge in shipments to the People's Republic of China was particularly marked, which could be a consequence of tighter customs controls under the country's 2013 Green Fence initiative. According to the preliminary Destatis statistics published at the end of February, Germany exported a total of around 922,600 tonnes of aluminium scrap and processing residues with a value of €1.14bn last year. The city of Chicago’s Zoning Board of Appeals has voted in favor of a special-use permit that will allow Pure Metal Recycling to go forward with the installation of an auto shredder in the Pilsen area of the city. The board approved the permit in a unanimous 3-0 vote. The board has five members, two of whom were not in attendance. Following the approval of the land-use permit, Pure Metal Recycling can begin construction on the project, though it still needs to obtain a construction permit from the city.
