According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. In North America SRS, which is owned by Sims Metal Management, operates 14 sites. Hydro will build a new, integrated recycling line for used aluminium beverage cans at its Neuss plant in Germany. The line will be completed by end 2015, and increase the plant's existing annual recycling capacity of 50,000 tonnes to more than 100,000 tonnes. In addition to more than doubling the recycling capacity at the Neuss plant, the new recycling line will be able to process a wide range of used beverage cans. Kandiyohi County Recycling Center has recently started operation on the newly installed massive aluminum can baler. Weighing nearly 800 pounds, each bale was made up about 26,400 crushed aluminum cans that had been brought to the recycling center in Willmar. During Earth Day celebration— and extending all this week through Saturday — the county is paying a bonus of 5 cents per pound for aluminum cans in hopes of pumping out many more 800-pound bales of cans that the county will transport and sell to an aluminum recycling plant. British aluminum recycler Alutrade is suing Aleris International for allegedly failing to pay for more than 2.3 million lbs of used beverage containers (UBCs), bottle tops and whole cans early last year, according to documents filed on April 15 in a US District Court in Ohio. Alutrade is seeking damages of more than $725,000. An Aleris spokesman declined to comment, stating that the company does not address pending litigation. Alutrade claims that Beachwood, Ohio-based Aleris initially refused pre-payment of four invoices for orders filed from February to March 2013 that totalled nearly $569,000.
