According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. UC RUSAL, a leading global aluminium producer, has conducted the initial tests of new equipment within the project for melting furnace installation in the casthouse at Sayanogorsk smelter (RUSAL Sayanogorsk). The project investment will total up to USD 10 million. The project, scheduled to be implemented throughout 2015–2016, aims to boost efficiency by recycling the processed waste of value-added products. New data released by EAFA, the European Aluminium Foil Association, confirms that recycling rates in Europe for alufoil trays and semi-rigid containers in 2013 reached about 55%. China produces more aluminum than any other country. Secondary production, or producing metal from recycled scrap metal, is the primary opportunity to reduce the country's energy intensity for both of these industries, because secondary production uses significantly less energy than primary production using raw material inputs. In 2012 the Chinese nonferrous metals industry (which includes aluminum and other metals) used 2.1 quadrillion British thermal unit (BTU or Btu) of energy. Packaging waste recovery data for the third quarter of 2015 shows that reported aluminium packaging recycling has recorded its highest ever quarterly performance at 23,330 tonnes, according to figures released by the Environment Agency. According to the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro), the Q3 figures are the direct result of adjustments made to the accreditation process, following lower than expected tonnages in Q1 and Q2, and increasing volumes of aluminium packaging recovered from incinerator bottom ash (IBA) being reported through the system. Morristown, New Jersey-based Covanta has started up its new metal recycling processing operation in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania. The new facility cleans and sorts metals recovered from a number of Covanta’s energy-from-waste (EfW) facilities in the Northeast.
