According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has updated national emission standards for hazardous air pollutants to account for changes to the secondary aluminum production category. Secondary aluminum production facilities include those with an aluminum scrap shredder or with a sweat furnace. Novelis, the frontrunner in aluminium recycling, is seeking expansion in its global presence. It is considering strategic tie-ups with more number of scrap metal suppliers from the UK. The recycler had been working on a closed loop creation encompassing its automotive customers such as Jaguar and Land Rover.
