According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. According to TSI, containerized shredded index for Indian imports remained flat at $241 a ton CFR Nhava Sheva port. Imported volumes were once again light as participants held off from buying amidst volatility in finished steel prices and currency FX. MetalX, Waterloo, Indiana, has announced it has completed the acquisition of the assets and business of Metal Shred Industries LLC (MSI), an aluminum scrap toll processor located in Kendallville, Indiana. The MSI name will be retired and the facility will be identified as MetalX effective immediately. MSI, founded in 2006 as an affiliate of Metropolitan Alloys, shreds aluminum scrap on a toll basis for a variety of customers in the aluminum sector. It currently processes nearly 10,000 tons of aluminum annually. Hydro is hoping to lodge an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the demolition of the Kurri Kurri aluminium smelter by the end of the year. Alongside, the company also plans to commence an investigation to study the viability of various options for recycling the pot lining of the idled aluminium smelter. Hydro shut the smelter three years ago, rendering 500 people jobless. In 2014, the company announced remediation plans, which included putting 350 thousand tonnes of contaminated waste in a containment cell on the smelter site. In a statement the company says site materials such as concrete, metal and pot lining will be recycled, wherever it is found reasonable and feasible. That would help reduce adverse environmental impact to a large extent.

Following approval from Defra and the Environment Agencies, revisions are being introduced to the protocol that account for aluminium packaging recovered from incinerator bottom ash (IBA). Three revisions to the protocol are designed to obtain a more accurate rate of the aluminium packaging currently being recycled in the UK or exported for recycling, the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) has announced. The existing protocol, which is based on the mixed non-ferrous element of IBA, has been revised. The protocol now recognises that a minimum of 70% of the mixed non-ferrous metals recovered from IBA is aluminium packaging, including drinks, cans, foils and aerosols. This increase from the previous percentage of 50% follows detailed studies of tested samples and discussions...
Due to the Yen depreciation and the weak demand from overseas market, export prices for Chinese secondary aluminium alloy ingot, used for diecast automotive components, fell steeply this week as some producers turned aggressive. The prices edged down by $30t to about $1,730-1,750t CIF Japan this week. The spot Chinese export price of ADC12 alloys was assessed at $1,740-$1,790/mt FOB China Tuesday, down $55/mt from $1,815-$1,825/mt FOB last week. Last week also witnessed some slip of export prices from $1,800-1,820t CIF Japan to about $1,760-1,780t CIF Japan. It is predicted that export prices for Chinese secondary aluminium alloy ingot will drop further as the auto industry in Japan will not turn better in the short term.

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is taking steps to improve compliance of aluminium reprocessors after the number of aluminium packaging waste recovery notes (PRNs) issued in the UK failed to meet statutory business targets for 2015. In the second quarter of 2015, figures show only around 12,334 tonnes of aluminium were recycled, compared to the estimated 16,750 tonnes required per quarter to achieve the government’s target. The industry argues, however, that the actual recycling level is much higher, but that it is not being correctly reported because the PRN system is not fit for purpose, due to an onerous voluntary accreditation process. Australia’s Sims Metal Management (SMM), one of the world’s largest recycling companie, has reported lower revenue but increased profits in its annual financial report for its fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2015. In a presentation delivered Aug. 21 and posted on the company’s website, the company says it recorded higher earnings for the year despite lower sales volumes. The company cites strong growth in Europe and growth in global electronics recycling operations as factors in the company’s performance for the year. Revenue fell 11 percent to AU$6.3 billion (US$4.6 billion), while underlying earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) increased 19 percent to AU$142 million (US$104 million). The First Baptist Church of McConnell Richard Smith Memorial Men’s Fellowship Scholarships were awarded Sun., Aug. 9, during the morning service. The church has given this award since 1987. There has been more than $40,000 given to the different college-bound members of the church the past 26 years. The funds that are collected for the scholarship come from a variety of ways. The major project of the men’s group of the church is to finance the scholarship. This is done by collecting aluminum cans for recycling. Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP) chairman Phil Conran said a simpler accreditation process for the Packaging Recovery Note (PRN) system will be introduced from 2016 onward. The changes proposed therein will hopefully encourage more secondary aluminium businesses (as well as other metal reprocessors) and exporters to register for the system. That will in turn boost the number of PRNs on the market and provide the Government with a more accurate picture of UK packaging recycling. The committee’s technical liaison group wants the Environment Agency (EA) to allow hassle-free accreditation without sampling.
