Europe’s recycled aluminium industry is an important component of the global secondary aluminium supply chain, with Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom (UK) representing key national markets. Production across the European region stood at nearly 6 million tonnes in 2023, supported by established scrap recovery systems, industrial recycling capacity and demand for recycled metal. Russia also contributes to the regional landscape through secondary aluminium production units concentrated in several industrial centres. According to AL Circle’s analysis in its report, “ World Recycled ALuminium Market Analysis Industry Forecast ”, the four countries present different market structures, from Germany’s substantial recycling capacity and Italy’s scrap-based production to the UK’s organised...
According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. According to CAAM data, automobile production in September was 2.99 million units, up 11.4 per cent M-o-M but down 8.7 per cent Y-o-Y. NEV production was 1.814 million units, up 12.2 per cent Y-o-Y. CAAM noted that China's...

Following the best from waste concept, city-based NGO Centre Sustainable Development (CSD) has carried out a survey to quantify tetrapack waste generated in the city. At a later stage, it is planning to recycle it because tetrapack waste can be of great value as it contains paper and aluminium. A Delhi-based NGO Chintan, working in association with tetrapack manufacturers, had earlier approached CSD to carry out this survey. As part of the survey, the NGO is getting sales figures from major tetrapack distributors in the city. The figures reveal a popular mango juice company sells 5,500 packs daily and 1,65,000 monthly, whereas another popular fruit juice brand generates a sale of 2000 packs daily or 60,000 packs monthly. Tetrapacks being stiff containers are usually used for liquid food...

East, North and South Ayrshire Councils have joined forces to call on residents to make their metals matter and boost household recycling of metal packaging across Ayrshire in south-west Scotland. The campaign aims to make everyone think more about the waste metal in their everyday drinks cans, food tins and aluminium food trays – the sort of household waste that easily gets taken for granted and put in the bin. Every year, more than 173m items of metal packaging are thrown away by Ayrshire households – that’s almost 20,000 drinks cans, food tins and aerosols getting binned every single hour of the day. That’s equivalent to the same weight as 14 double-decker buses every year. East, North and South Ayrshire Councils are now taking part in the campaign, supported by the metal packaging...

Solum has developed a range of aluminium outrigger pads, reducing the weight of the units and providing a fully recyclable product. The pads are available in three sizes, all 600mm wide and either 600mm, 1,200mm or 1,800mm long. They weigh between 13-38kg, enabling them to be lifted by one or two people within safety limits. A single 600mm x 600mm pad can spread a 20t SWL, while a five-unit arrangement of 600mm x 1,800mm pads can spread a 100t SWL. The pads have been tested by Lloyds British Testing and the performance verified. Bob Quinn, technical director at Solum, said: "We designed the Solum so it could be laid in a variety of configurations to accommodate a large range of loads, yet remain light enough to be man-handleable. Currently to get steel pads into place, the crane will...

The latest Packaging Recovery Note (PRN) figures show that aluminium is struggling to meet recycling targets. The Q2 figure is over 6,000 tonnes lower than where it needs to be and follows a 3,000 tonne shortfall in Q1. For the first half of the year, the figure is 20% down. Phil Conran, director at consultancy 360 Environmental, left, said aluminium was the poorest PRN performer. “The reasons are the continued lack of incinerator bottom ash (IBA) protocol accreditation and reduced demand [for recycled aluminium] in the UK because one of the big reprocessors has had less requirement in Q2,” he said. Following protocol changes which came into effect at the beginning of 2015, aluminium packaging contributed by scrap metal dealers was discounted from the recycling figures. The quantities...

Following concern expressed by Alupro about the suitability of the Packaging Recovery Note (PRN) system for recording aluminium packaging recycling it has commissioned a research project to reveal the real recycling rate. Alupro has repeatedly voiced concerns to Defra and the Environment Agency (EA) about the inherent weaknesses in the PRN system. The EA and Defra are now working with the Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP) to consider options to streamline the accreditation process. However, it is unknown whether this will be adequate to encourage more reprocessors and exporters to register. Alupro advocates streamlining the reprocessor/exporter accreditation system and reducing the administrative burden with the aim of capturing the true amount of aluminium packaging recycled in the...

United States shredded scrap prices plummeted in the week ended July 10, while US aluminum scrap prices on Scrap Register Price Index stayed stable. According to TSI, US Midwest shredded index fell $16 a long ton to $266 a long ton (delivered mill) the week. As was reported in “buy-week” last month, East coast export yards had purchased large volumes of material designated for export. However, with Turkish mills dropping out of the market all together in the last few weeks, these export yards have been left in the lurch with no option but to sell the material back into the domestic market. This, together with a number of bulk cargoes booked into the States, served to push the market into oversupply. US mills knew this, and dropped their offers accordingly, with some prices down up to...

Nasser Aboura, chairman of U.A.E.-based Aboura Metals, said the nonferrous scrap sector in the Middle East and North Africa region has grown along with the oil and construction industries that have characterized the region in the past several decades. The region has exported considerable amounts of scrap to China, but Aboura said India is “the largest trading partner with the Middle East” and is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. “Pre-2010, China was the largest importer of scrap metals from the Middle East,” said Aboura. India has subsequently assumed the No. 1 slot, with its annual imports of aluminium scrap far outweighing copper and lead scrap. Mohan Agarwal of secondary aluminium producer Century Metal Recycling, Palwal, India, said he foresees Indian demand for...

The Brussels-based Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) has issued a statement applauding the latest provisions issued by India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) with regard to self-certification of imported, processed metallic scrap. The BIR, along with national trade associations Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), Washington, and the Metal Recycling Association of India (MRAI), had contacted Indian government ministries to ask that appropriately equipped scrap yards be permitted to self-certify the quality and safety of their processed metallic scrap. As a result, BIR reports, India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in late June 2015 issued Public Notice 23/2015-20, adding requirements for those recyclers seeking to self-certify exports of...
