According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. The GACR Industry Challenge, sponsored by the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI), collected and recycled 193,213 pounds of beverage cans, raising more than $85,000 for local charities across the United States. In time for National Recycling Week (9-15 November), Boyne Smelters Limited (BSL) is now operating Queensland's only and Australia's largest aluminium can recycling facility after a successful pilot proved the potential of the value-add processing concept earlier this year. The smelter is now recycling around 13 million aluminium cans a month, which will add 2,400 tonnes of aluminium to its production annually. Sims Metal Management, based in Sydney and New York, has issued a profit warning for its upcoming quarterly results, will buy back shares of its own stock and is scaling back operations globally, with a focus on the United States. According to TSI, US Midwest shredded index fell by $14 a long ton the week to $167 a long ton (delivered mill). Order books for steel at US mills remain fairly dire, meaning appetite for scrap has been extremely low with several mills reportedly out of the market all together this month. Brazil, the world's biggest collector of aluminium cans, broke its own record for recycling the material in 2014, the Brazilian Aluminium Association, or Abal, said. The numbers can be attributed to the rising costs of energy and the fragility of an economy plagued by recession and accelerating inflation, Abal said.
