According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Aluminium rolling and recycling leader Novelis released its sustainability report for Fiscal Year 2015 (FY15) on December 22. The company doubled its recycling capacity over the past five years, among other achievements. Recycled aluminium produces 95 percent fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and requires 95 percent less energy than primary aluminium production, according to the company. Over the past three years, the number of councils collecting aerosols has increased from 87 per cent to 96 per cent, providing almost complete coverage throughout the UK. Meanwhile, foil recycling has also seen a dramatic increase in collection, from just 35 per cent of councils in 2007 to 86 per cent today. India has started an anti-dumping probe into imports of aluminium foil, widely used by food and pharmaceutical firms, from China to protect domestic producers from cheap imports. Hindalco Industries, Raviraj Foils and Jindal India have approached the Directorate General of Anti-Dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD) for initiation of anti-dumping investigation and imposition of anti-dumping duty on imports of aluminium foil from China. According to the monthly report from Aluminum Association, can stock (class) scrap receipts fell y-o-y in the month of November in US and Canada. New can stock (class) scrap receipts totaled 53.1 million pounds during November 2015, off 7.3 percent from the November 2014 total of 57.2 million pounds. Compared to the previous month, class scrap receipts decreased 8.1 percent from the October 2015 total of 57.7 million pounds. Year-to-date class scrap receipts through November 2015 totaled 627.1 million pounds, down 2.7 percent from the 2014 year-to-date total of 644.2 million pounds.
Due to the continued recovery of demand for aluminium foil products in Europe the market is recovering slowly. The gap between 2014 and 2015 aluminium foil production narrowed to just a 0.3% drop by the end of the third quarter, compared with 2.5% in the first quarter of the year, reports the European Aluminium Foil Association EAFA. The EAFA region covers EU 28, Armenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, Russia, Serbia, Switzerland and Turkey. This continues the trend seen in the second quarter.
The European Union imposed anti-dumping duties on imports of Russian aluminium foil on Friday after its investigation showed the product was sold across the bloc at below market prices, the EU's Official Journal said. A definitive anti-dumping duty of 12.2 percent will be levied on aluminium foil from Russia, which is all made by the Rusal group, the world's largest aluminium producer. "The (European) Union industry suffered material injury, which was reflected most notably in the negative profitability almost during the entire period considered," the Official Journal said. Local authority (LA) collection of aluminium foil and aerosols has grown rapidly in recent years, according to new data released by the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro), which works on behalf of members from across the aluminium supply chain to fulfil the industry’s obligation to recycle aluminium packaging. Over the past three years, the proportion of councils collecting aerosols has increased from 87 per cent to 96 per cent, while foil has seen a dramatic increase in the last eight years, going from being collected by 35 per cent of councils in 2007 to 86 per cent today. The hunt is on in Ireland with thousands of school children in Dublin seeking out used tea light holders to collect for recycling, thanks to an initiative from Alupro Ireland, which is being co-financed by EAFA, the European Aluminium Foil Association. Alupro Ireland’s Tea Light Hunt campaign, launched in conjunction with retailer IKEA and WEEE Ireland, seeks to encourage recycling of used tea light holders in the Greater Dublin area and includes some fun activities for children. Revised packaging recycling targets put forward by the EU Commission on 2 December, show a move to capture more aluminium cans and to streamline compliance reporting. The Commission has put forward staggered packaging recycling targets of 65% by 2025 and 75% by 2030. Under the objectives, producers will be required to reuse or recycle a minimum of 75% by weight of all packaging waste used. Targets for individual waste streams include 75% for wood and 85% for ferrous metal, glass, aluminium and paper and cardboard.
