According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. The metal recycling industry of India has urged the government for exemption on Special Additional Duty (SAD) and removal of basic import duty on inbound shipments of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap to give a boost to the sector. The industry recycles aluminium among other metals mainly from automotive, power, infrastructure, construction and white goods industry. Groundbreaking for Gulf Aluminium Rolling Mills Company's (Garmco) $55 million aluminium remelt plant was held on Thursday near the company’s main production facilities in Bahrain. The project, which is part of a three-year programme aiming to increase profitability and explore opportunities for the company in the regional as well international markets, is due for completion by November 2017. On completition, the remelt plant will produce 120,000 tonnes of aluminium slabs and create around 50 new jobs while generating significant cost savings. Aluminium imports of ingot, scrap and mill products into the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) totaled 417 million pounds in November 2015, up 1.0 percent over the November 2014 total of 413 million pounds. Including scrap, which accounted for roughly 57 percent of reported aluminium exports in November, exports totaled 522 million pounds, down 5.5 percent from a year ago. The U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 757 million pounds of aluminium scrap during October 2015, according to aluminium recycling statistics published by the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of Interior, down 7.0 percent from the October 2014 total of 814 million. USGS estimates that recovery of aluminium and aluminium alloys totalled 654 million pounds, a decrease of 7.5 percent year-over-year. Through October, preliminary data indicate that recovery of aluminium from scrap totalled an estimated 6,593 million pounds, down 1.7 percent from the 2014 YTD total of 6,710 million. U.S. exports of scrap, not included in the government’s consumption statistics, totalled 2,897 million pounds YTD, down 10.0 percent from the same period in 2014.

The number of local authorities collecting empty aerosol containers for recycling has increased from 87 to 96% in the UK, according to new figures published by Alupro, the aluminium packaging recycling body. The figures also show that over the past three years the number of councils collecting aluminium foil for recycling increased from just 35% of councils in 2007 to currently 86%. ‘These latest statistics indicate foil is now also eligible for widely recycled status, comments Jane Bevis, chair of the On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL). Seven in ten consumers act on clear recyclability advice, states Bevis. ‘500 brands use our labels across hundreds of thousands of products, so that can make a real difference,’ she adds.
