According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. German aluminium producer Trimet said that it installed a new rotary furnace on February 15 at its Gelsenkirchen plant in West Germany for expanding the group’s recycling capacity. The furnace is able to melt up to 200 tonnes of aluminium scrap every day and load up to 40 tonnes. The firm after the installation of the new furnace said the expansion is significant but did not specify the exact size of the capacity increase. Viridor, one of the UK’s leading recycling, renewable energy and waste management companies, will invest £15.4 million in the Masons Materials Recycling Facility near Ipswich. The investment, a part of a 10-year contract renewal between Suffolk County Council and Viridor, will increase capacity from 65,000 tonnes to 75,000 tonnes per annum, with a significant investment in mechanical recovery equipment, including 11 optical sorters. Scrap dealers in Japan have notified today, on February 8 that the prices of used aluminium beverage cans or UBC are down by 8 per cent since the start of this year. Beverage makers’ shift to plastic polyethylene terephthalate bottles is the main reason for this price fall, said the dealers further. According to scrap dealers in Tokyo and Nagoya, transaction prices this week were at Yen 110-120/kg (($1,010-$1,100/mt) ex-yard, down 8% from a month ago. McPherson resident Warren Vincent is reportedly expanding by putting up a new collection site for Cans 4 Kansas Honor Flights at the Citizen’s State Bank and Trust Co., parking lot in Lincoln. Cans 4 Kansas Honour Flights is a mission to help fund Kansas Honor Flights by recycling aluminium cans. Vincent had started this project in 2011. He noted Lincoln is the northern-most site of now 21 locations spread around central Kansas. Kansas Honor Flights is a non-profit organisation sending Kansas veterans of WWII, and the Korean and Vietnam wars to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials. The city of Alton has reportedly expanded its recycling programme with an aim to create a sense of mindfulness for the environment among residents and help them recycle more. Early this month, the city installed a dozen bins all over the Sylvia Vela Park located right next to the Alton City Hall. According to Alton’s Recycling Coordinator Martha Alaniz, the city at present has two recycling drop off points that accept paper and cardboard products along with plastic and aluminium items such as cans and bottles. This initiative is for seeking a change of use on an existing light industrial unit to a recycling facility. Per the report, the facility will operate only with clean, recyclable materials. The East of England Co-op has launched a new campaign with Ipswich Borough Council to encourage more recycling in Ipswich, England. East of England Co-op said the retailer will run an in-store trial to increase awareness of items that can and can’t be recycled, and will introduce recycling points for plastic packaging, carrier bags and batteries in its 20 stores across Ipswich.
