German aluminium producers and processors produce about 560,000 tonnes of aluminium, out of which 260,000 tonnes is comprised of primary aluminium and 300,000 tonnes recycled aluminium. This indicates that Germany produces recycled aluminium more than primary, thanks to its world’s largest auto-making sector. Besides using this large amount of scrap for producing secondary aluminium domestically, the country is also known for exporting a substantial amount every year.
According to the available data, Germany this year is estimated to export around 1.06 million tonnes of aluminium scrap, down 11 per cent from 1.19 million tonnes in 2018. In 2017, the country’s scrap export volume was at 1.08 million tonnes, down 9 per cent from 2018, but up 2 per cent from 2019. This shows that after a year-on-year rise in 2018, Germany’s aluminium scrap exports are likely to stand down in 2019.

Germany ships aluminium scrap to various parts of the world, among which Austria and Italy are the two most prime destinations. The above graph shows that in 2019 Germany expects to export around 157,929 tonnes of scrap to Austria and 145,123 tonnes to Italy. In the previous year, the volumes were higher in tandem with the total quantity of worldwide export by Germany. To Austria, Germany exported 191,541 tonnes and to Italy 166,180 tonnes in 2018. In 2017, the aluminium scrap exports from Germany to Austria and Italy were at 183,555 tonnes and 169,759 tonnes respectively.
The below graph also shows Germany’s revenue from aluminium scrap exports:

As we can see, Germany is estimated to yield around US$ 1230 million this year from its aluminium scrap exports, compared with US$ 1379 million in 2018 and US$ 1213 million in 2017. This indicates that in consequence to the fall of Germany’s aluminium scrap exports by volume this year, the revenue is also likely to dip after a rise in the year ago.
The graph also shows that Germany this year is likely to earn US$222 million from aluminium scrap exports to Austria, in contrast to US$ 247 million in 2018 and US$ 241 million in 2017. From exports to Italy, on the other hand, Germany is forecast to yield US$ 153 million in 2019. In 2018 and 2017, the values were at US$ 168 million and US$ 179 million, respectively.
