According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Daiki Aluminium Industry India, a 100 per cent subsidiary of Daiki Aluminium Industry Co. Ltd., Japan, has broken ground on a new aluminium alloy recycling plant at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh (AP), India. Daiki Aluminium Industry will make an investment of INR250 crore. The new aluminium alloy recycling plant will be built on a 20 acre plot in the Domestic Tariff Zone and is expected to be commissioned by February 2020. According to Shanghai Metals Market, operating rates across Chinese secondary aluminium producers dropped to a record low in February. The Chinese New Year holiday and poor end-market demand were the two main reasons for the decline, as suggested by SMM. Even in January, China’s secondary aluminium producers operating ratings were down by 2.37 percentage points from December. Its average rate in the said month was at 54.84 per cent, SMM data showed. The Coca-Cola Foundation is reportedly funding community recycling pilots in seven cities across the United States, in a bid to encourage their efforts. The amount it is giving is $5.4 million, including $4 million for a three-year programme with the Recycling Partnership in Atlanta. “In each pilot city, local partners will work together to identify barriers to recycling on a local level and test a range of solutions,” said Carlos Pagoaga, group director of community partnerships for the Coca-Cola Foundation. Veolia has partnered with the restaurant chain Leon to introduce a reverse vending machine that will accept aluminium cans and plastic bottles in return for 10% discount at the nearest Leon restaurant. Matalco’s US$80 million aluminium recycling plant in Wisconsin Rapids got preliminary approval from the city's Finance and Property Committee to the purchase agreement for the land and the developer's agreement for the project. Matalco Vice President for Corporate Development Robert Roscetti says there are still a few details that need to be finalized in that agreement, but things are on track. They expect to have a ground breaking in June provided all paper works are done on time and permits received as expected. New reforms if implemented, including a deposit return scheme (DRS), may double the aluminium recycling and prevent around £50 million of wasted resources each year each year, as suggested by environment think tank Green Alliance report.
