According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. A Queensland woman recycling containers to raise money for her dream destination wedding has taken the internet by storm. Leonie Starr from the Sunshine Coast has already reportedly recycled 51,455 containers at the TOMRA Recycling Centre in last five months, while she needs to recycle about 810,000 bottles and cans to generate money for the wedding. Malaysia imported 14,300 tonnes of aluminium including scrap from the USA in February, 81.7 per cent higher than the corresponding period of 2018, according to the latest Mineral Industry Survey report from US Geological Survey. Imports increased 41.58 per cent from January’s import volume of 10,100 tonnes. During January-February, aluminium imports from the USA came in at 24,400 tonnes, an increase of 64.86 per cent from 14,800 tonnes in the same period last year. Alupro has objected to the Scottish Government’s plan to introduce 20p deposit return system for all sizes of containers. The proposed 20p deposit will lead to unintended consequences, specifically on the sales of multi-pack cans. “This is double the level typically used in the Scandinavian DRS programmes,” Alupro said. “The proposed 20p deposit would increase the cost of 24 cans in a multipack by £4.80 whilst the same volume of drink sold in four 2-litre plastic bottles would increase by 80p.” Alupro said that they have raised concerns directly with the Scottish Government and Zero Waste Scotland. The Scottish government has announced a new Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) that will include aluminium and steel cans, and drink containers made of glass and PET plastic.
