
According to recent estimates, in 2018, Austria imported 305,101 tonnes of aluminium scrap from global markets, an increase of 10733 tonnes or 4 per cent year-on-year. The cost of import stood at USD383 million.

The country’s estimated aluminium scrap import from Germany increased 1.3 per cent year-on-year last year. Import from Germany rose from 183,555 tonnes in 2017 to 185,952 tonnes in 2018. This year, the estimated import volume is expected to decline 7 per cent year-on-year to 173,140 tonnes.
Other major aluminium scrap suppliers in 2018 were Switzerland (24492 tonnes), Poland (18049 tonnes), Slovakia (12791 tonnes), Czech Rep. (10777 tonnes) and France (10192 tonnes).

In 2017, Austria imported an estimated 294,368 tonnes of aluminium scrap, up 13 per cent from 2016’s import volume of 260,987 tonnes. The cost of import in 2017 came in at USD382 million. This year, total aluminium scrap import is estimated to drop 4 per cent from 2018 and 0.87 per cent from 2017. Import is estimated to stand at 291,802 tonnes in 2019. The cost of import is estimated to be USD374 million.
