Queensland Alumina scraps gas power plant plans

Queensland Alumina Limited, that operates the world's largest alumina refinery has confirmed it has shelved a proposed gas-fired power station in central Queensland.

The company had planned a co-generation gas power plant at its Gladstone refinery to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, which would have powered about a third of the refinery.

The refinery is minority-owned by the Russian company Rusal.

Its Australian chairman, John Hannagan, says current energy policies do not favour using gas. "The Government wanted to reduce emissions and as a consequence introduced a tax to drive us to another fuel - in this case the push was for gas," he said.

"Unfortunately that wasn't done and as a consequence we really don't have access to a competitive domestic fuel source."

Earlier this week, the Federal Government announced it is investigating the effects of reserving some gas for domestic users.
