Qatalum and Hydro to study zero net energy buildings
The ‘Zero Energy and Emission Building’ lab, located on site at the Qatalum smelter in Mesaieed Industrial City, was opened by Qatalum Vice Chairman Hilde Merete Aasheim, Qatalum CEO Tom Petter Johansen and the Executive VP of Hydro.
Aasheim said: “Today, around 40% of the world’s energy consumption is related to operating heating and cooling in buildings, but if the temperature inside a room can be lowered by one degree Celsius, 5-10% of the energy spent on AC can be realised. Hydro has delivered a number of energy-positive buildings.”
Dr Chris Devadas, head of the separate Technology Centre set up by Qatalum and Hydro at the Qatar Science and Technology Park, commented: “The ‘Zero Energy Emission’ facilities will enable us to provide environmentally sustainable knowledge on options for building design and layout.”
Johansen added: “A zero energy building is a building with zero net energy consumption and zero carbon emissions annually. While no such building currently exists in Qatar, the potential to achieve this is great, and the goal is becoming more practical.”
