US Fed rate hike lands, accelerated aluminium ingot destocking expected to support aluminium prices

Macro perspective: Outside China, the US Fed raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 3.75per cent-4.00per cent as expected, the first hike since July 2023, with a unanimous FOMC vote. The dot plot showed one more possible rate hike in 2026, extending the period of high interest rates. As a result, US Treasuries saw heavy selling, the US dollar and real yields rose, directly weighing on the valuation of dollar-denominated nonferrous metals. Geopolitically, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz persisted, with Iran claiming the strait was under its "smart control," and a regional shipping security meeting originally scheduled in Oman was forced to be postponed, raising energy transport and risk premiums. Overall, macro sentiment was mixed. Fundamentals: Supply side, this week, China's weekly...

RUSAL deploys neural network at the Irkutsk Aluminium Smelter to detect production quality of aluminium ingots

The Russian aluminium giant, RUSAL has deployed a neural network to detect the quality of aluminium ingots produced at the Irkutsk Aluminium Smelter. The latest system automatically scans the surface quality of small aluminium ingots during production. Surface defects on each aluminium ingot are examined on the casting conveyor using a video monitoring system and special-purpose software. The neural network uncovers various types of defects, such as cracks, bumps, and foreign inclusions. It saves all the information concerning the defect and is displayed as an analytical diagram, with data available regarding the number of each type of defect per day and the number of ingots that did not pass quality assurance per shift. China to continue release aluminium from state reserves in batches: Source

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said on Monday, July 19, that China would continue to release aluminium from state reserves to lower the metal price. In a rare move aimed at cooling a rally in metal prices that has moved up raw materials costs for Chinese downstream aluminium manufacturer, the country sold 50,000 tonnes of primary aluminium in only a day of two allotted for the auction. More than 200 non-ferrous fabricators attended the bidding, with sales prices about 3-9 per cent lower than market price that day, the NDRC spokesperson Yuan Da said at a press briefing. "The release initially achieved the expected goal ... targeted placement granted downstream fabricators an opportunity to replenish stocks and lower some companies' raw material costs," Mr Yuan said....

The carbon tariff will apply to the energy-sensitive products imported into the EU from manufacturing countries with weaker environmental measures. Aluminium, iron and steel are among others that stand as the first contender for this carbon border tax. The EU said: “The policy is designed to stop carbon leakage and the risk companies will relocate to countries with weaker regulations.” However, multiple of the union’s trade partners are dejected by the methodology and criticized by saying “it is protectionism in a green...
