US Fed rate hike lands, accelerated aluminium ingot destocking expected to support aluminium prices

Macro perspective: Outside China, the US Fed raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 3.75per cent-4.00per cent as expected, the first hike since July 2023, with a unanimous FOMC vote. The dot plot showed one more possible rate hike in 2026, extending the period of high interest rates. As a result, US Treasuries saw heavy selling, the US dollar and real yields rose, directly weighing on the valuation of dollar-denominated nonferrous metals. Geopolitically, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz persisted, with Iran claiming the strait was under its "smart control," and a regional shipping security meeting originally scheduled in Oman was forced to be postponed, raising energy transport and risk premiums. Overall, macro sentiment was mixed. Fundamentals: Supply side, this week, China's weekly...

Major exhibitions and preparations for the World Cup are also expected to contribute to...

The LME aluminium benchmark price leaped to a new milestone of US$3,000 per tonne, first time ever since 2008. The prices are likely to continue to grow, thanks to a rapid increase in China’s domestic alumina price and expected production cut at Yunnan Province during September-December. 3-month bid price and 3-month offer price grew to US$2,949.50 per tonne and US$2,950 per tonne, respectively. Tenfold growth in Russian aluminium exports to $7.4 billion in July 2021, shows Federal Customs Service

The Russian aluminum shipment abroad experienced a tenfold surge in July, says the data recorded by the Federal Customs Service. Previously this year, the Russian authorities had imposed a 15 percent tax or a minimum of $254 per tonne for the aluminum exports between August and December. The tariffs also target the foreign sales of ferrous and non-ferrous products like copper, nickel, aluminum, metals and metal products. Compared to the major metal and mining commodities, the global aluminum prices have reportedly increased by 40 percent since the beginning of the year. The increase in the price is due to the structural changes in the...
