Saudi Arabia’s aluminium consumption could climb to as much as 1.8 million tonnes a year by 2030, as the Kingdom ramps up infrastructure and industrial development ahead of the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Ahmad Al-Alshaikh, executive vice president of Maaden’s Aluminum Business Unit, said demand is expected to reach at least 1.6 million tonnes annually by 2030, up from around 1 million tonnes currently. Consumption could potentially double over the next five to seven years, he said. Speaking on the sidelines of the Fastmarkets International Aluminium Conference in Budapest, Al-Alshaikh said construction of 15 new stadiums for the football tournament is helping to support aluminium demand, Reuters reported. Major exhibitions and preparations for the World Cup are also expected to contribute to...

The implementation comes with three parts: prevention and pre-control, graded early warning, and graded response. The plan includes 4 alumina plants in Guizhou Province (installed annual production capacity of 4.4 million per tonnes, excluding Guizhou Qizheng) and also 5 aluminium plants (installed compliance annual production capacity of 1.34 million per tonne and the current functioning annual production capacity of 1.3 million per tonne). After month-long negotiations, a Japanese buyer has reportedly nodded to pay a premium of $220 per tonne for aluminium shipments for the December quarter of 2021, an increase of 19 per cent from the current quarter in tandem with the higher overseas premium, said two sources directly involved in the pricing talks. For July-September shipments, Japanese aluminium buyers are paying $185. The increase in premium for the next quarter marks the fifth consecutive quarterly rise and the highest since the April-June quarter in 2015. But it is lower than the initial offers of $230-$250 made by overseas producers. Japan is Asia’s biggest aluminium importer. So, the premiums it agrees to pay for aluminium shipments in each quarter over the London Metal Exchange cash price set the benchmark for the...

The National Bureau of Statistics showed on Wednesday, September 14, that China’s aluminium output in August fell for the fourth straight month, attributing to tight restrictions on metal production and power usage. As per the data, the world’s top aluminium producer churned out 3.16 million tonnes of primary aluminium in August, down 3.2 per cent from 3.263 million tonnes in July but up 0.4 per cent year-on-year. Many regions in China suffering from power shortages or under pressure to reduce carbon emissions ordered smelters to cut back production. A prefecture in the western Xinjiang region, a home to almost one-fifth of the country’s primary aluminium capacity, directed five major smelters last month to cut 10% monthly output levels for August-December. That brought total cuts in...

Yunnan located in Southwest China has reportedly asked the local smelters to reduce the production of aluminium by 30 percent for the rest of the year to help them in meeting their goals of reducing greenhouse emissions and energy use. Because of the abundant hydropower facility, Yunnan has turned out to be one of the most preferred locations for aluminium smelting projects and also other nonferrous metal refineries. In 2020, around 2.6 million tonnes of aluminium was added in Yunnan, making it up by 72 percent since the last year. Around 1.4 million tonnes of aluminium capacity was planned to put into operation this year. By assigning to Yunnan and using their hydropower, the aluminium projects have become greener and the province is shifting from being the green power supplier to...
